Dehradun: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Housing Department of Uttarakhand is accelerating the development of parking facilities to tackle traffic congestion in the state’s major cities, pilgrimage sites, and tourist destinations. Soon, 11 prominent locations will see the launch of parking facilities with a combined capacity of 1082 vehicles. This move aims to ease the growing traffic woes and improve infrastructure ahead of the upcoming tourist season.
Expansion of Parking Facilities in Major Cities and Tourist Spots
To address the increasing traffic jams in Uttarakhand’s key cities and pilgrimage centers, the Housing Department is fast-tracking the development of parking facilities. Under this initiative, 11 major locations will soon have new parking spaces that will accommodate 1082 vehicles. These facilities are part of the government’s broader plan to improve the state’s infrastructure and provide a better experience for both residents and tourists.

114 DPRs Approved and 54 Locations Operational
The department has already approved 114 Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for parking development across various locations. This includes surface parking, multi-level parking, and tunnel parking options. Currently, parking facilities at 54 locations, capable of holding 3244 vehicles, are already operational. The government is focused on completing the remaining projects promptly to meet the needs of the increasing traffic flow in the state.
Second Phase of Parking Projects Nearing Completion
In the second phase, construction at 11 locations is nearly 80% complete. The Housing Department has set a target to complete these parking facilities by the end of the current financial year. Additionally, 11 other locations will see parking spaces created by development authorities, adding 359 more vehicle slots to the state’s parking infrastructure.
Secretary Housing Dr. R. Rajesh Kumar’s Instructions
Dr. R. Rajesh Kumar, Secretary of Housing, has instructed all development authorities to expedite the completion of parking projects. He emphasized that the new parking facilities should be ready before the upcoming tourist season. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of maintaining hygiene, providing adequate lighting, and ensuring the availability of toilet facilities at these parking sites.
Reducing Traffic Jams and Enhancing Visitor Experience
With millions of pilgrims and tourists visiting Uttarakhand annually, the increasing number of private vehicles has naturally led to growing traffic congestion. Over the past four years, the government has developed thousands of parking spaces at various key locations, significantly improving traffic flow. These new developments are expected to greatly reduce traffic jams, enhancing the overall experience for visitors and easing local commuters’ daily travel.
