Badrinath: Amid rapid construction under the ambitious Badrinath Corridor Development Project in Uttarakhand, scientists and geologists have raised key ecological concerns and recommended strict scientific monitoring.
Researchers from the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) presented a detailed environmental impact study before Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan in Dehradun on Thursday. The study evaluates the ecological balance and environmental risks associated with large-scale construction activities in the sensitive Himalayan region.
The move comes in the backdrop of the Joshimath land subsidence crisis, highlighting the fragile geological nature of Uttarakhand’s mountainous terrain.
Need for Scientific Monitoring in Fragile Himalayan Region
During the presentation, the Chief Secretary emphasized that in a hill state like Uttarakhand, maintaining environmental balance alongside development is essential. He directed officials to ensure verification of findings through detailed surveys and stated that scientific assessments would be utilized wherever necessary.
Given the Himalayan region’s vulnerability to landslides and seismic activity, authorities are taking precautionary steps to avoid ecological damage while executing the master plan.
Scientists Warn of Slope Instability and Carrying Capacity Risks
According to experts, the use of heavy machinery and deep excavation in the Badrinath area may destabilize mountain slopes. They also recommended continuous monitoring of large buildings and hotels being developed under the corridor project.
Since the only access route to Badrinath passes through Joshimath — an area already affected by land subsidence — scientists have stressed the urgent need to assess the region’s “carrying capacity” to prevent further ecological strain.
CM Pushkar Singh Dhami Reviews Development Projects
On the same day, Pushkar Singh Dhami held multiple high-level meetings and attended key development events.
He met Lieutenant General Anindya Sengupta, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Command, to discuss contemporary issues. The Chief Minister also attended foundation-laying and inauguration ceremonies for various development projects in Tehri Garhwal, including the upgradation of a Primary Health Centre (PHC).
Later, he paid a courtesy visit to Governor Gurmit Singh (Retd.) at Lok Bhavan. The leaders discussed ongoing development projects and other key state matters.
Focus on Roads, Healthcare and Education in Hill Areas
CM Dhami reiterated that projects whose foundation stones have already been laid must be completed on time. He said the state government is prioritizing essential infrastructure such as roads, healthcare services, and education in remote hill regions.
He added that with strong determination, resource limitations can also be effectively addressed.
Badrinath Corridor: Towards a Smart Spiritual Hill Town
The Badrinath Corridor Project aims to transform Badrinath into a “smart spiritual hill town” with a focus on environmental sustainability and disaster management.
The project is designed to make the pilgrimage safer, smoother, and spiritually enriching for devotees visiting the sacred shrine of Badrinath Temple.
Riverfront Beautification, Ropeway and Employment Opportunities
Key features of the project include:
- Beautification of the Alaknanda riverfront
- Construction of new rest houses and modern sanitation facilities
- Improved parking facilities
- Better connectivity, including the proposed Hemkund Ropeway
- Enhanced connectivity to border villages like Mana
The project is expected to generate employment opportunities for local residents and boost tourism-driven economic growth in the region. Improved infrastructure in border areas is also likely to strengthen strategic preparedness.
