On the eve of Kargil Vijay Diwas, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Mr. Pushkar Singh Dhami announced a major welfare measure for soldiers, significantly increasing the ex-gratia amount for Param Vir Chakra awardees from Rs. 50 lakh to Rs. 1.5 crore. The recipients will continue to receive an annual grant of Rs. 3 lakh, as earlier.
The announcement was made during the Sainik Samman Ceremony in Khatima, held in memory of the Chief Minister’s father, Late Subedar Shri Sher Singh Dhami. Mr. Dhami approved the proposal put forth by the Sainik Welfare Department, marking a major step in the state’s commitment to honouring the supreme sacrifice and bravery of India’s war heroes.
Continued Efforts to Honour the Brave
This is the second time the ex-gratia amount has been revised under Mr. Dhami’s leadership. Before June 2022, the ex-gratia for Param Vir Chakra awardees stood at Rs. 30 lakh. It was increased to Rs. 50 lakh by a Cabinet decision on June 10, 2022, and formalised through a government order issued on July 14, 2022. With this new revision, the ex-gratia has now seen a fivefold increase since 2022.
Uttarakhand: From Devbhoomi to Veerbhoomi
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Dhami said, “The borders of our country are safe due to the valour, courage and sacrifice of our brave soldiers. It is the duty of every citizen to respect and honour the bravery and dedication of our armed forces. Uttarakhand is not only Devbhoomi, but also Veerbhoomi, which has given countless bravehearts to the nation.”
He added that the life of a soldier and their family is a symbol of discipline, sacrifice, and service, and reiterated his government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of ex-servicemen and their families.
This move is being widely hailed as a bold and respectful gesture, reinforcing Uttarakhand’s image as a state that deeply values its military legacy and stands firmly behind its soldiers.
