Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday inaugurated the ‘Swadeshi Sankalp Run’ from Gandhi Park in Dehradun, an event organized to commemorate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. The run witnessed enthusiastic participation from a large number of youth, reflecting their commitment to the ideals of nationalism, self-reliance, and cultural pride.
CM Dhami Pays Tribute to Swami Vivekananda
Addressing the gathering, CM Dhami extended his greetings to the youth and paid homage to Swami Vivekananda, describing him as a “torchbearer of India’s spiritual and cultural heritage” and a continual source of inspiration for the younger generation.
He said, “My dear young brothers and sisters, on this auspicious day, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to all of you. Swami Vivekananda’s message of determination, courage, and service continues to guide us, and today we reflect on the power, potential, and responsibility of India’s youth.”
CM Dhami emphasized that Vivekananda’s famous call, “Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is achieved,” should inspire young Indians to contribute actively towards nation-building and achieving a developed India by 2047.

Encouraging Youth Participation in Nation-Building
The Chief Minister urged youth to adopt a disciplined lifestyle, stay away from drugs, focus on education and skill development, and actively participate in initiatives such as Start-up India, Make in India, Skill India, and Vocal for Local. He stressed that collective effort and adherence to Swami Vivekananda’s ideals are crucial in shaping a progressive, self-reliant nation.
CM Dhami also highlighted the importance of translating patriotic ideals into practical actions that empower communities and strengthen local economies, encouraging participants to make the ‘Swadeshi Sankalp Run’ a stepping stone toward social responsibility and civic engagement.
Significance of National Youth Day
National Youth Day is observed every year on January 12 to celebrate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, who was born Narendranath Datta in Kolkata on 12 January 1863. Swami Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Mission on May 1, 1897, to promote Practical Vedanta and social service, bringing together monks and laypeople to contribute to the welfare of society.
He is also remembered worldwide for his historic speech at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893, where he introduced India’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage to the Western world, inspiring generations to uphold values of courage, tolerance, and social responsibility.
