Hyderabad: VEM–TKMS torpedo partnership marks an important step in strengthening India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem. Hyderabad-based VEM Technologies has signed a teaming agreement with German naval systems giant ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) to jointly produce heavyweight torpedoes for the Indian Navy.
The agreement focuses on transferring advanced torpedo technology to India and producing these underwater weapons locally. The project is aligned with the Government of India’s “Make in India” defence manufacturing initiative, aimed at reducing dependence on imports and boosting domestic capability.
Details of VEM TKMS Partnership
Hyderabad-based VEM Technologies Pvt. Ltd. has entered into a teaming agreement with ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), a German company known worldwide for naval platforms and submarine systems.
The agreement is a continuation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in September 2025, which laid the groundwork for collaboration in submarine weapon technologies.
With the latest agreement, both companies will jointly work on the production of heavyweight torpedoes in India, mainly for the Indian Navy’s submarine fleet.
Key Focus Areas of the VEM TKMS Partnership
The project will focus on manufacturing heavyweight torpedoes, which are among the most important weapons used by submarines.
These torpedoes will be used by the Indian Navy’s submarine fleet, including platforms such as Kilo-class and Scorpene-class submarines.
Heavyweight torpedoes are designed to:
- Destroy enemy submarines and warships
- Provide underwater combat capability
- Increase survivability and strike power of submarines
Local production will help India improve the reliability and availability of these critical weapons.
Production to Take Place in Hyderabad
Under the agreement:
- VEM Technologies will handle procurement of raw materials, fabrication, manufacturing, and final assembly.
- Production will take place at VEM’s facilities in Hyderabad.
- Around 500 torpedoes could be produced annually under the collaboration.
This production scale could significantly boost India’s domestic defence manufacturing capability.
Technology Transfer From Atlas Elektronik
A key part of the agreement is technology transfer from Atlas Elektronik, a subsidiary of TKMS.
Atlas Elektronik will provide:
- Torpedo technology
- Software licences required for production
- Technical support for manufacturing
This transfer of technology will allow Indian companies to develop deeper expertise in underwater weapon systems.
According to company officials, the transfer will help strengthen India’s technological independence in naval weapons.
Importance of VEM TKMS Partnership
The partnership directly supports the Government of India’s defence indigenisation strategy.
Key benefits include:
- Reduced dependence on foreign imports
- Development of domestic defence manufacturing
- Creation of skilled jobs in defence technology
- Strengthening of India’s submarine warfare capability
Experts believe this initiative will help India build a stronger self-reliant defence ecosystem.
Why Torpedo Manufacturing Is Strategically Important
Submarine weapons like heavyweight torpedoes are critical for naval warfare because they allow submarines to attack targets stealthily underwater.
For decades, India depended largely on foreign suppliers for these systems. Local manufacturing will:
- Improve supply security
- Reduce long-term procurement costs
- Enhance operational readiness of the Navy
As India continues to modernize its submarine fleet, reliable torpedo production inside the country becomes increasingly important.
