In a significant move, the Mamata Banerjee led West Bengal government has implemented a major reshuffle within its police department following public outcry over the tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital last month.

1994 batch Vineet Kumar Goyal has been transferred to the Special Task Force (STF) of the West Bengal Police, where he will serve as the Additional Director General (ADG). He was posted as Commissioner of Police, Kolkata.

Manoj Kumar Verma, a 1998-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, has been named as the new Commissioner of Kolkata Police.

2021 batch IPS officer Dipak Sarkar has been moved from his present designation as DC – Est, Siliguri Police Commissionerate, to the post of DC – North Division in Kolkata, after protesting doctors submitted their “five-point demands” to CM Mamata Banerjee after the RG Kar Medical College Horror.

Mr Jawed Shamim, an IPS officer of the 1995 batch, was made the ADG and IGP (Law & Order).

Additionally, Deputy Commissioner of the North Division of Kolkata Police, Abhishek Gupta, has been transferred to serve as the Commanding Officer of the second battalion of the Eastern Frontier Rifles (EFR).

In further changes, Gyanwant Singh, the Director of the Directorate of Economic Offense, will move to the Intelligence Branch of the state police, also as ADG.
