Gorakhpur: In a major administrative reshuffle on 28 July, the Uttar Pradesh government transferred 23 IAS officers, appointing IAS Deepak Meena as the new District Magistrate (DM) of Gorakhpur, the home district of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Deepak Meena, a 2011 batch IAS officer, replaces Krishna Karunesh, who completed a three-year term in the role.
Career So Far: From Siddharthnagar to Ghaziabad to Gorakhpur
Before this posting, IAS Deepak Meena was the DM of Ghaziabad. He has held key administrative roles in several districts, including Meerut, and was DM of Siddharthnagar from 2019 to 2022. Known for his sharp administrative skills, Meena has also served as Joint Magistrate and Chief Development Officer (CDO) in other districts of UP.
His appointment as DM of Gorakhpur is seen as significant, given the political and administrative importance of the district.

Educational Background: From IIT to IAS
Born on 15 July 1986, Deepak Meena hails from Rajasthan. He completed his B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur, one of India’s premier institutions. Following graduation, he worked briefly with Tata Steel before deciding to pursue a career in public service.
UPSC Journey: Cracked CSE in 2010, Joined IAS in 2011
Deepak Meena cracked the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2010, securing a place in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). He belongs to the Uttar Pradesh cadre (2011 batch) and has since served in various capacities across the state.
His civil services preparation began in Aligarh, where he trained after leaving his private sector job.
Notable Incidents: Meerut Stampede Rumour
Deepak Meena was also in the news in December 2023, during a stampede incident at a religious event (Katha by Pandit Pradeep Mishra) in Meerut. At that time, he was DM of the district and stated that the reports of a stampede were false and based on rumours, a response that drew attention.
Served Multiple Districts
After training, Meena joined the Uttar Pradesh cadre, starting in Aligarh and later serving as Joint Magistrate in Azamgarh, Saharanpur, and Aligarh. He was Chief Development Officer in multiple districts, including Bulandshahr and Agra. From 2017 to 2019, he was District Magistrate of Shravasti, then Siddharth Nagar, and since 2022, he has been DM of Meerut. Despite criticism, his career shows strong dedication to public service and the demands of IAS roles.

Krishna Karunesh, the outgoing DM of Gorakhpur, had held the position for over three years, one of the longest tenures in the district in recent years. His transfer had been anticipated for some time, and Deepak Meena’s posting brings a fresh face to the district administration.
