Patna/New delhi: Ms Kim Sharma, a prominent 2008 batch IPS officer from the Bihar cadre, is once again in the headlines following her promotion from Deputy Inspector General (DIG) to Inspector General (IG) of Police. Known widely as the “Lady Singham” for her strict policing style, Kim has previously made news for both her tough approach to crime and controversies surrounding her working methods.
From Lucknow to the Police Force: Kim’s Early Life
Born and raised in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Ms Sharma comes from an academically inclined family—her father is a professor while her mother is a homemaker. Inspired by the popular television serial Udaan, which depicted the challenges faced by women in the police force, Kim decided to pursue a career in law enforcement.
Excelling in her studies, she graduated from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi, followed by a postgraduate degree from Hindu College and an MPhil from Delhi University. She cleared the UPSC exam in 2008, securing the 130th rank, and was allotted the Bihar cadre.
Rise Through the Ranks: From Bhagalpur to Patna
Kim Sharma’s policing career began as a Superintendent of Police (SP) in Bhagalpur. She later became the City SP of Patna, taking over during the tenure of notable IPS officer Shivdeep Lande. Her strict work style earned her recognition for apprehending notorious criminals and significantly curbing crime in the state capital. Her approach and determination made her a role model, especially among young women aspiring to join the police force.
Kim’s work and persona earned her the nickname “Lady Singham,” and she even received widespread attention on social media, including numerous marriage proposals. Her personal life also aligns with her professional sphere—her husband is an IPS officer.
Controversy: The Viral Video Incident
Despite her achievements, IPS Kim has not been without controversy. During her posting in Patna, a video allegedly showing her assaulting a family during a protest went viral. Reports indicated that she became angry during a confrontation and physically attacked a boy from the protesting family. The incident drew criticism from several political parties and created a significant public uproar.
Ms Kim, however, has consistently emphasized prioritizing duty over public opinion. In recent years, she has maintained a lower media profile, but her strict policing style continues to be discussed in official circles and among the public.
Promotion to Inspector General: A Major Career Milestone
Ms Kim Sharma has been on central deputation for several years. She previously served as DIG at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) before being appointed DIG of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) on September 18, 2024.
Ahead of the New Year, the Bihar government promoted five senior IPS officers of the 2008 batch on central deputation to the rank of IG. Alongside Kim, the officers include Upendra Kumar Sharma, Satyaveer Singh, Vikas Barman, and Nitasha Gudiya.
This promotion elevates Kim’s seniority and pay scale while also serving as a morale booster for other Bihar cadre officers serving on central deputation. Her rise to IG marks another significant milestone in a career defined by determination, strict policing, and resilience against challenges.
Kim Sharma: An Inspirational Journey
From facing gender discrimination to becoming one of Bihar’s most talked-about IPS officers, IPS Sharma’s journey reflects perseverance and dedication. Despite controversies, her rise from a scholarship student in Lucknow to a high-ranking IPS officer exemplifies the potential for women in Indian law enforcement to challenge stereotypes and make a lasting impact.
