The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has confirmed the appointment of Mr Rahul Navin, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of 1993 batch, as the new Director of Directorate of Enforcement (ED).
Mr Navin, who currently serves as Special Director at the ED, will take over from the outgoing Director, Sanjay Kumar Mishra, an IRS officer of 1984 batch.
According to the order issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Department of Personnel & Training, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri Rahul Navin, IRS (IT:93074), Special Director, ED as Director of Enforcement in the Directorate of Enforcement for a period of two years with effect from the date of assumption of charge of the post, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”
Mr Navin, a distinguished IRS officer, is set to officially assume his new role as Director of Enforcement. He has been with the ED for an extensive period and has played a key role in its operations, including a significant tenure as Special Director, a position he stepped into after Mishra’s term concluded on September 15, 2023.
Apart from this, Mr he has also worked as an Under Secretary to the new Finance Minister.
His appointment is notable for several reasons. He has been working closely with Mr Mishra, who has been a mentor and has provided him with valuable insights and experience in the workings of the Directorate.
The appointment follows a recent ordinance enacted by the government, which allows for the extension of the tenure of the ED and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chiefs by up to three years, beyond the initial two-year term. This ordinance reflects the government’s commitment to providing stability and continuity in these crucial positions.
Currently, the Enforcement Directorate is engaged in investigations involving over 100 political leaders across the country, with a significant majority being from opposition parties. Navin’s appointment comes at a crucial time as the ED continues to navigate complex high-profile cases.
WHO IS RAHUL NAVIN
Mr Navin hails from Bihar. He holds a B.Tech and M.Tech from IIT Kanpur and an MBA from Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne. He has worked in the Income Tax Department for 30 years.
The notable aspect is that Rahul Naveen has previously held many important positions within the investigation agency itself. He has played a significant role in investigating numerous cases related to economic crimes and money laundering. He is recognized as a stringent officer with an excellent track record during his postings in various departments.
During his tenure as the acting chief of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), he was instrumental in the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren in separate money laundering cases.
