In her post, Officer Sahu wrote about how around 3 lakh Olive Ridley turtles have arrived on Odisha’s coast for their annual arribada—a synchronized nesting event. This year, in a rare occurrence, the nesting is happening during the daytime. These turtles play a vital role in maintaining the marine ecosystem, and their large-scale return signifies a thriving habitat.
Arribada is the phenomenon of mass nesting observed in Olive Ridley turtles, where thousands of female turtles come ashore simultaneously to lay eggs. This synchronized event occurs annually, primarily on the coasts of Odisha, India, and Costa Rica, ensuring higher survival rates for hatchlings. The term “Arribada,” meaning “arrival” in Spanish, reflects this rare natural spectacle. Conservation efforts and protected nesting sites play a crucial role in safeguarding these vulnerable marine creatures and maintaining the delicate balance of the ocean ecosystem.
