In a landmark move to advance Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s vision of “Samudra Se Samriddhi” (Prosperity Through the Sea), the Gujarat government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Mr. Bhupendra Patel, has taken a major stride in strengthening India’s maritime sector. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) worth Rs. 17,000 crore was signed between the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) and Gujarat Pipavav Port Limited (APM Terminals) in Gandhinagar on Wednesday.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Mr. Bhupendra Patel and Mr. Robert Maersk Ugla, Chairman of the AP Moller-Maersk Board, marking a significant partnership aimed at accelerating Gujarat’s maritime infrastructure growth and economic expansion.
Strengthening Gujarat’s Status as India’s Maritime Gateway
Chief Minister Mr. Bhupendra Patel hailed the MoU as a defining step toward reinforcing Gujarat’s identity as the Maritime Gateway of India. The expansion of Pipavav Port under this agreement will enhance the efficiency of the state’s logistics and trade ecosystem, helping reduce both the time and cost of exports and imports.
He further emphasized that the move will spur large-scale development of industries, warehousing facilities, and supply chain networks in and around the port, giving a strong boost to the local economy.
Rs. 17,000 Crore Investment to Create 25,000 Jobs
The Rs. 17,000 crore expansion project will directly and indirectly create around 25,000 employment opportunities, benefitting local youth and uplifting the socio-economic fabric of surrounding communities.
Officials stated that the new investment will significantly enhance the port’s capacity for handling container, bulk, liquid, and Ro-Ro cargo, making operations faster, cleaner, and more technologically advanced.
The development plan includes:
- Construction of new liquid cargo berths
- Advanced mechanical bulk-handling facilities
- Modern container terminals
- Digital operation systems
- Environmentally sustainable port infrastructure
Maritime Amritkal Vision 2047: A Step Toward Future Readiness
This project aligns with the Maritime Amritkal Vision 2047, envisioned by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, which aims to expand the capacity of Gujarat’s non-major ports to 3000 MMTPA by 2047. The Pipavav Port expansion will thus play a crucial role in positioning Gujarat as a global hub for maritime trade and logistics.
Mr. John Golden, Chief Executive of APM Terminals for Asia and the Middle East, highlighted that the investment is not only focused on expanding Pipavav Port but also on creating new avenues for Gujarat, India, and international trade. He expressed confidence that the project will make Pipavav a model of world-class efficiency and sustainable growth.
Strategic Collaboration for Global Competitiveness
The MoU signing ceremony witnessed the presence of key dignitaries, including Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Mr. M.K. Das, Advisor to the Chief Minister and Chairman of GMB Mr. S.S. Rathore, Principal Secretary (Ports and Transport) Mr. R.C. Meena, and Executive Vice Chairperson of the Gujarat Maritime Board Ms. Remya Mohan.
Representing APM Terminals and Maersk were Group Chief Representative Officer Mr. Rene Pedersen, Managing Director of Gujarat Pipavav Port Mr. Girish Agarwal, and Head of Public Policy and Regulatory Affairs for Maersk (India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka Region) Mr. Vivek Sharma.
Their collective presence underscored the strong partnership between Gujarat and global maritime leaders, paving the way for economic resilience and international trade excellence.
A Blueprint for Coastal Prosperity
The Pipavav Port expansion exemplifies Gujarat’s commitment to building world-class infrastructure that supports trade, innovation, and employment. As the state continues to pioneer India’s maritime growth, this project will serve as a catalyst for achieving sustainable economic development and enhancing India’s global competitiveness in shipping and logistics.
