Punjab: The Punjab Chief Minister Sehat Yojana is emerging as a crucial pillar of health security, offering up to ₹10 lakh per family in free medical treatment. The initiative ensures timely medical care, reducing the financial burden during sudden health emergencies such as heart attacks, cancer, and childbirth complications.
Comprehensive Coverage for Critical Illnesses
Under the scheme led by CM Bhagwant Singh Mann, over 33 lakh families have been registered, with more than 1.98 lakh treatments approved, amounting to approximately ₹330 crore. The program covers over 2,300 diseases in both government and private hospitals, including heart surgery, cancer treatment, and emergency care for childbirth complications.
Medical experts emphasize the importance of early detection. Dr. Isha Arora, Medical Officer at Mohali District Hospital, highlighted that patients often arrive at hospitals after diseases progress to advanced stages. Regular check-ups and early intervention improve outcomes but remain underutilized due to lack of awareness.

Timely Treatment Can Save Lives
Experts stress that in medical emergencies, every minute counts. According to the American Heart Association, even a few minutes’ delay during a heart attack or stroke can cause permanent damage or death. Dr. Arora added that families often hesitate to seek treatment due to financial concerns, making schemes like CM Sehat Yojana critical for timely care.
Bridging the Gap Between Healthcare Need and Affordability
The Punjab Health and Family Welfare Department stated that the scheme helps reduce out-of-pocket expenses, which account for nearly 47% of total healthcare costs in India. Early signs indicate improved hospital admissions, faster emergency response, and increased preventive screenings among beneficiaries.
Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh said the initiative ensures equal access to healthcare across the state. Efforts are ongoing to expand coverage, enhance hospital networks, and simplify claim processes for patients.
Focus on Preventive Care and Rural Outreach
While the scheme provides financial security for emergency treatment, experts note that preventive healthcare remains limited, especially in rural areas. According to the National Family Health Survey, only 25% of rural adults undergo basic health check-ups, and cancer screening for women is below 2%.
The CM Sehat Yojana not only offers treatment but also emphasizes preventive care, financial preparedness, and increased awareness, strengthening Punjab’s healthcare infrastructure and improving health outcomes for all age groups.
