New Delhi: Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), a Singrauli-based subsidiary of Coal India Limited, has launched the second phase of its flagship CSR initiative ‘Nanha-Sa-Dil–NCL’, aimed at providing free cardiac screening, diagnosis and treatment to children from economically weaker and underserved families.
The initiative is designed to support early detection and timely treatment of congenital heart disease (CHD). Under the second phase, children across Singrauli and nearby regions of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh will be covered.
NCL Partners with Sri Sathya Sai Health and Education Trust
NCL has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sri Sathya Sai Health and Education Trust for implementing the second phase of the programme.
The initiative will cover children across:
- Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh
- Sidhi, Madhya Pradesh
- Rewa, Madhya Pradesh
- Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh
- Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
The programme will focus on taking cardiac screening services closer to beneficiaries through schools, Anganwadi centres and health facilities, helping identify children who may require specialised cardiac care.

₹9.17 Crore Project to Screen 52,500 Children
The second phase of ‘Nanha-Sa-Dil–NCL’ has a total project outlay of ₹9.17 crore and will be implemented over 24 months.
The programme has set the following targets:
- 700 screening camps to be organised.
- 52,500 children targeted for cardiac screening.
- 1,600 echocardiograms to be conducted.
- 500 cardiac surgeries and interventions to be facilitated for children diagnosed with congenital heart disease.
By conducting screening activities close to children’s homes, the initiative aims to reduce barriers to accessing specialised healthcare and support early identification of congenital heart conditions.
The programme will provide support across the treatment journey, including screening, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up for identified beneficiaries.
NCL Highlights ‘Mining with Purpose’ Approach
Speaking at the launch, NCL CMD N. Franklin Jayakumar described ‘Nanha-Sa-Dil’ as an impactful CSR initiative reflecting the company’s philosophy of “Mining with Purpose – Khanan Dil Se.”
He highlighted the programme’s focus on reaching children who need medical assistance and providing critical support to families from economically weaker and underserved communities.
NCL also reaffirmed its commitment to developing and continuing innovative CSR initiatives aimed at creating a meaningful social impact.
First Phase of Nanha-Sa-Dil Exceeded Targets
The first phase of the programme was implemented from March 2025 to August 2026 across the Singrauli region of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
The initiative exceeded its original targets across screening and treatment activities.
Key achievements of the first phase include:
- 534 screening camps conducted against a target of 345.
- 38,315 children screened against a target of 17,250.
- 909 echocardiograms conducted against a target of 405.
- 300 cardiac surgeries and interventions successfully completed.
The programme therefore achieved 155% of its target for screening camps and 222% of its target for children screened.
Free Cardiac Treatment and Support for Beneficiary Families
NCL supported beneficiaries throughout their treatment journey, including counselling, travel, accommodation, surgery and post-treatment care.
Children from economically weaker and underserved families received cardiac surgeries and interventions free of cost at specialised hospitals, including Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospitals.
‘Gift of Life’ Presented to First-Phase Beneficiaries
During the launch ceremony of the second phase, beneficiaries of the first phase and their families were also present.
NCL and Sri Sathya Sai Health and Education Trust presented these beneficiaries with a ‘Gift of Life’, symbolising renewed hope and a healthier future after receiving cardiac care.The participation of former beneficiaries also highlighted the impact of the first phase and the programme’s focus on supporting children beyond initial screening through treatment and follow-up care.
Second Phase to Expand Reach Across Five Districts
With a ₹9.17 crore investment and a 24-month implementation period, the second phase aims to expand the reach of free cardiac care to more children across the region.
The combination of community-level screening, echocardiography, specialised treatment and follow-up support is expected to help identify congenital heart conditions at an early stage and connect children with appropriate medical care. The initiative represents NCL’s continued focus on using its CSR programmes to address healthcare needs among underserved communities.
