Born and raised in Lucknow, IAS officer Ritu Suhas’ journey from a highly accomplished academician to a distinguished IAS officer and even Mrs. India 2019 is a testament to her perseverance and passion for studies, service, and fashion.

In an exclusive conversation with Indian Masterminds, the 2018-batch IAS officer, currently posted as the Additional Director of Local Bodies, Urban Department in UP, talked about her journey from a PCS to an IAS, and also earning the title of Mrs. India, as she kept following her passions and living her dreams.

THE CALL OF CIVIL SERVICE

Ms. Suhas completed her schooling from Loreto Convent and graduated from the prestigious Lucknow University where she earned a gold medal for her academic brilliance. She then moved on to become a teacher and was content with her job when a close friend advised her to try her hand at the UPSC examination, as she understood that Ms. Suhas was academically blessed and had been scoring good grades ever since she was young.

“I couldn’t afford coaching then, so I was very skeptical if I’ll be able to clear the exam or not. I did self-study and was very happy when I cracked the PCS examination and became an officer. I was, in fact, the female topper of the batch and topped judicial services as well,” she told Indian Masterminds.

MARRIAGE AND PROMOTIONS

In 2009, Ms. Suhas married IAS officer Suhas LY, and her career continued to ascend as she served in various capacities across Uttar Pradesh. From districts to departments, her dedication and excellence earned her promotions, culminating in becoming an IAS officer in 2018.

Notably, her tenure as Deputy Director of Consolidation in Azamgarh garnered widespread acclaim, particularly for her contributions to voter awareness, education, and empowerment during elections. She received accolades from the highest echelons of government, including the President of India, for her exemplary election activities.

Additionally, her excellence in sanitation awareness and management during the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj further solidified her reputation as a dynamic and impactful administrator.

NAVIGATING CHALLENGES

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges, but Ms. Suhas rose to the occasion, serving tirelessly at the Integrated Command and Control CentrE (ICCC) in Lucknow. Amidst the chaos, she coordinated the distribution of essential medical supplies, ensuring the provision of oxygen and hospital beds to those in need.

Her efforts extended to managing facilities for low-wage workers and providing critical support during the second wave of the pandemic. For Ms. Suhas, this period was not just a test of her administrative skills but also a deeply fulfilling experience, reaffirming the purpose behind her decision to become a civil servant.

MRS INDIA 2019

Parallel to her administrative duties, Ms. Suhas maintained her passion for fashion and modeling, often showcasing designs for her friends. This passion led her to participate in Mrs. India 2019, where she represented Uttar Pradesh and ultimately clinched the coveted title.

Beyond the glamour of the stage, Ms. Suhas views her platform as an opportunity to promote indigenous fashion, particularly Khadi wear, advocating for its incorporation into daily attire. Her commitment to both service and style reflects the multifaceted nature of her journey and the depth of her impact on society.

“Now, for the past 5-6 years, I have been doing a lot of shows for promoting Khadi wear, on both private and government level. I want to show the public how Indian wear is as beautiful as Western wear, so that they incorporate more of Khadi wear in their daily outfits,” she said.

Ms. Suhas’ journey embodies resilience, dedication, and the pursuit of excellence across multiple domains. From her academic achievements to her distinguished career in public service and her triumph on the fashion stage, she continues to inspire others with her unwavering commitment to making a difference in the world.
