Nagpur Hospitals Will Now Send Newborns Home Along With Their Aadhar Card

The Nagpur District Administration has taken a noble initiative to boost central government’s vision of expanding ‘Aadhar Linked Birth Registration’ to all states

After taking the initiative of providing caste certificates to school students in their school campuses only, Nagpur District Magistrate Vipin Itankar has yet again come up with another welcome move, whereby Aadhaar cards of new born babies are being issued in the hospitals itself.

The officer is known to be proactive when it comes to making life comfortable for the people of his district. This is because he believes in streamlining processes to provide every kind of support right at the people’s doorstep. His latest move has come as a big relief for the people of Nagpur as the benefit can be availed by all the parents who are expecting a new born baby. Under this new process, the Aadhar card is being issued not only for the infants who are born in government or semi-government hospitals, but in private hospitals also.

AADHAR REGISTRATION FOR INFFANTS

Aadhaar card, a 12-digit unique identity number, is the world’s largest biometric system launched in the year 2009 in India. It is voluntary for the citizens of the country to have an Aadhaar card as it gives a proof of residence and not a proof of citizenship. However, it is used and accepted widely as an identity card nowadays.

While speaking to Indian Masterminds, IAS officer Vipin Itankar said, “Earlier, the Aadhaar Linked Birth Registration (ALBR) was not being followed properly in the district. Due to this, the parents of the baby had to go to nearby designated places like the post office, etc, to register for a Aadhar card for their new born.”

STREAMLINING AADHAAR LINKED BIRTH REGISTRATION

Hence, to streamline this, the new process was started. Now, if a baby is born in a medical college in the district, immediately, the corporation people starts working on issuing a birth certificate of the new born. After the birth certificate is issued, the Postal or Health department will enroll a Aadhar card of the baby and hand it over to the parents before the mother is discharged from the hospital. “We are trying to make it an end-to-end system so that no inconvenience is caused to anyone. It has been taken up on a mission mode and we are working on taking the coverage from 30 to 100 percent,”” said Mr. Itankar.

He had directed the concerned officers regarding this new development during a meeting on 22 November.

Issuing Aadhaar cards in hospitals for new born children

Heads of institutions at the district hospitals, women hospitals, Government medical college and hospitals, sub-district hospitals, rural hospitals and Primary Health Centers of the state have been appointed as registrars to maintain births and deaths records.

The administration has also provided training to staffs for proper maintainance of records. Accordingly, all government hospital registrars should issue birth certificates of the baby immediately after birth in the hospital. The registrar will coordinate with India Post Payment Bank Aadhaar Enrollment staff and complete the process of Aadhaar enrolment of the newborn.

Meanwhile, Mr. Itankar has also taken up the initiative of organising camps in schools and colleges to issue caste certificates and other documents needed by the students to continue their studies. During the camps, certificates for caste, non-creamy layer, age, residence address, nationality, economically weaker section (EWS), income, etc. are issued.
