At present, as the demand for grains and other food items is rising due to an increase in population, people have started increasing the use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture to increase the yield. Due to this, we are now forced to consume chemical-rich foods, including fruits and vegetables, which directly increases our chances of catching long-term diseases and health issues. This is why people are now shifting towards organic or homegrown vegetables as they do not contain harmful chemicals.

Organic vegetables are chemical-free and are good for health. Many people try growing them at home. If you also wish to grow vegetables in your garden or on the roof of your house through organic farming, then this article is for you.

Telangana Horticulture Department is conducting a training program on urban farming for interested individuals, twice a month in Hyderabad city. Indian Masterminds interacted with Mr. P. Yadagiri, Deputy Director, Urban Farming Divisions, Telangana Horticulture Department, and learned more about this initiative.

Training Programme

The department of horticulture is going to extend support to interested households in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad that will mainly focus on growing vegetables on terraces, balconies, and open places. They will do this by conducting a training program on urban farming, every month on the second Saturday and fourth Saturday at Telangana Horticulture Institute situated in Hyderabad. The entry fees for the program will be Rs. 100.

Speaking to Indian Masterminds, Mr. Yadagiri said, “We conduct it twice a month on the second and fourth Saturday. We make people understand what is needed for terrace farming, and how to start it. We teach them everything about it. We have made 54 WhatsApp groups comprising all the participants. We share all the details there. We share farming information with photos and videos there. The participants can ask any question related to urban farming, and we reply to them directly. All the classes are held offline at the institute. ”

“There are around 20 lakh households in Hyderabad city. But only 15 thousand are doing terrace farming, as of now. It has a lot of potential to grow. The 100 rupees fees are just for the stationary and tax charges.”
