Noida/Lucknow: In a major relief for workers, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced an interim increase in minimum wages by up to 21% across different Worker categories. The decision comes a day after protests by employees in Noida demanding salary hikes turned tense on April 13.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also clarified that claims of a ₹20,000 monthly minimum wage are false, urging people not to believe misinformation circulating on social media.
Wage Hike Details for Workers in Uttar Pradesh
The revised wage structure varies by skill category and location, with Noida and Ghaziabad receiving the highest benefits.
Revised Monthly Minimum Wages (Approx.)
- Unskilled workers: ₹11,313 → ₹13,690 (21% increase)
- Semi-skilled workers: ₹12,445 → ₹15,059
- Skilled workers: ₹13,940 → ₹16,668
In municipal areas, unskilled workers will now receive around ₹13,006, while in other regions it is fixed at ₹12,356.
Highest Benefit in Noida and Ghaziabad
The government has specifically implemented higher wage rates in industrial hubs like Noida and Ghaziabad, where inflation and cost of living are comparatively higher. Officials said the revised structure aims to ensure fair compensation for workers while maintaining industrial balance.
Decision Comes After Noida Workers’ Protest
The announcement follows a violent protest by employees in Noida on April 13, where workers demonstrated on the streets demanding higher salaries. The situation had created tension in the region, prompting swift policy intervention by the state government.
Government’s Balanced Approach Between Industry and Labour
Officials said the wage revision is part of a broader national-level review process of minimum wages. The government highlighted that industries are currently facing challenges such as:
- Rising raw material costs
- Declining exports
- Global economic uncertainty
The policy aims to balance worker welfare and industrial sustainability.
CM Yogi’s Advisory to Industries
CM Yogi Adityanath urged industries to ensure:
- Timely payment of wages
- Proper overtime compensation
- Weekly holidays and bonus benefits
- Safe working environment for women
He emphasized that worker dignity and industrial growth must go hand in hand.
Women Empowerment Also Highlighted
During his remarks, the Chief Minister also reiterated support for increasing women’s representation in governance, stating that proposals for 33% reservation for women in decision-making roles reflect the needs of the time and should not cause concern among stakeholders.
The revised wage structure marks a significant policy shift aimed at improving the living standards of workers across Uttar Pradesh, especially in industrial regions. The government’s move is expected to ease tensions while strengthening the state’s labour ecosystem.
