In a quiet corner of Bihar, a young boy once walked miles to a small village school, dreaming not of power or prestige, but of purpose. Years later, that same boy, now IPS officer Prabhat Kumar, would exchange the comfort of a corporate office for the dust and danger of Chhattisgarh’s red corridors. His journey, from the classrooms of IIT Kharagpur to leading anti-Naxal operations in Narayanpur, is not just remarkable, it’s deeply human.
FROM A VILLAGE CLASSROOM TO THE IIT GATES
Born on 14 March 1987, Prabhat Kumar grew up in a simple family in Bihar. His father worked as a transporter, and his schooling, from Class 1 to 12, was done entirely in a village school. But what the school lacked in infrastructure, it made up for in the spark it ignited in him.
With focus and persistence, he cracked one of India’s toughest exams, the IIT-JEE, and secured admission to IIT Kharagpur, where he earned his B.Tech degree. Not stopping there, he went on to pursue an M.Sc, expanding his academic world far beyond the village boundaries he had known as a child.
THE COMFORTABLE LIFE HE WALKED AWAY FROM
Like many IITians, Prabhat’s professional life began with success. Through campus recruitment, he was selected as a Product Manager, a role he performed from 2011 to 2013. His analytical mind and calm approach to challenges made him a natural fit for the corporate world.
During that period, he also cleared seven different competitive exams, proving his exceptional intellect and discipline. Yet, despite this string of achievements, something in him remained unfulfilled. Behind the desk, in the hum of air-conditioned offices, he felt a quiet pull towards something larger: a life that demanded not just intellect, but courage.
In 2018, he decided to take the UPSC Civil Services Examination. And he cleared it in his very first attempt, earning a place in the Indian Police Service, Chhattisgarh cadre, 2019 batch.
A NEW CHAPTER IN KHAKI
On 16 December 2019, Prabhat Kumar officially joined the IPS. After completing his rigorous training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad, he was sent for field training to Raigarh district, where he began as the Station House Officer of Kotraroad Police Station.
It was in Raigarh that he experienced the real essence of policing: connecting with the public, understanding their issues, and tackling crime at the grassroots. From law enforcement to community policing, he embraced every challenge that came his way.
His next posting took him to Durg, where he served as City Superintendent of Police, Chhawni. Soon after, he was promoted as Additional Superintendent of Police (Addl. SP), Sukma, one of the most challenging Naxal-affected regions in India.
LEADING FROM THE FRONT IN THE RED ZONE
Currently serving as the Superintendent of Police in Narayanpur, Prabhat Kumar has become a key part of Chhattisgarh’s fight against Naxalism. Under his leadership, operations against extremist groups have intensified, resulting in multiple arrests and neutralizations.
His command style combines strategy with empathy, strengthening the force while ensuring that local communities feel protected and heard. Officers under him describe him as a calm leader who believes in “leading from the front.” In the dense forests of Narayanpur, where fear often dictates silence, his presence has restored a sense of security.
BEYOND THE UNIFORM
Behind the stern khaki exterior lies a man of many interests. Prabhat Kumar loves reading, particularly books on economics and fiction, and enjoys travelling whenever work allows. His colleagues often recall how he carries books on field postings, reading late into the night after long operations.
Prabhat Kumar’s journey is that of a man who chose challenge over comfort. From his early struggles in rural Bihar to the gates of IIT, from the cubicles of corporate India to the battle zones of Chhattisgarh, he has lived several lives in one.
Each posting, Raigarh, Durg, Sukma, Narayanpur, has sharpened his understanding of leadership and responsibility. And even now, as he continues to serve in some of India’s most demanding terrains, his focus remains unchanged: to serve with integrity, lead with courage, and bring peace where unrest once prevailed.
A STORY THAT INSPIRES
Few stories capture the essence of true service like that of IPS Prabhat Kumar. His path reminds us that success isn’t always about choosing the easier road, sometimes it’s about walking straight into the harder one, because that’s where you’re needed most.
