Shirin Pandit’s path to success wasn’t a straight spike. This 27-year-old from Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, traded her volleyball jersey for a forest ranger’s uniform, securing an impressive All India Rank 4 in the 2023 Indian Forest Service (IFS) exam.
Indian Masterminds exclusively spoke with her to learn more about her journey.
ROOTED IN EDUCATION
Shirin’s academic journey began in Pune, where she completed her schooling. Drawn towards the field of agriculture, she pursued a Bachelor of Science degree at the Agriculture College, Pune, followed by a Master’s degree in Agriculture with a specialization in Plant Physiology from Ahmednagar.
Her academic excellence shone through as she was awarded a gold medal for her Master’s program. Interestingly, Shirin’s mother, a teacher, and father, an employee of Hindustan Antibiotics, Pimpri (India’s first pharmaceutical PSU), instilled in her the values of dedication and hard work.
THE IFS DREAM TAKES FLIGHT
While the Civil Services Examination (CSE) was her initial ambition, Shirin found her calling in the Indian Forest Service. This was her second attempt at the IFS exam and her fourth attempt at the UPSC CSE.
“My first attempt was a gamble. I wasn’t prepared at all and it was just a basic trial, sort of. I appeared for two Mains in Civil Service: 2022 and 2023. This was my first Forest Mains and Interview, and I couldn’t believe I finally got selected as it was highly unexpected since the time between CSE Mains and IFS Mains was quite limited. I feel lucky as one of the optional subjects was the same in both exams – agriculture,” she stated.
A strategic approach saw her utilize Agriculture as her optional subject in both exams, allowing her to effectively manage her preparation. Even with an impressive AIR-4 in IFS, Shirin’s determination has her set to take another shot at UPSC CSE.
FORGING HER OWN PATH
Shirin’s preparation journey was a self-made one. Determined to achieve her goals, she opted out of coaching institutes, relying solely on test series for CSE and leveraging the vast resources available online through YouTube and the internet. This independent approach demanded a delicate balance between studies and household responsibilities.
Societal pressures, a common struggle for aspirants preparing from home, were another hurdle. The constant questioning and negativity surrounding her decision to stay home and study only strengthened her resolve.
“The mental pressure became too much to handle at times, especially while sitting unemployed at home and preparing for years with no outcome. However, my parents were extremely supportive throughout. They took care of me and motivated me through the entire journey and I would love to express my heartfelt gratitude to them,” she told Indian Masterminds.
FAMILY, FITNESS, AND FICTION
Shirin’s success story is incomplete without acknowledging the support of her parents. After a disheartening outcome in the 2022 Mains, they encouraged her to continue her pursuit, a decision that ultimately paid off.
When not immersed in studies, Shirin, a volleyball player since school, prioritizes her physical well-being. Reading, another passion, served as a welcome escape during her preparation, keeping her mind sharp and focused.
A SURPRISE BEYOND IMAGINATION
After years of consistent failures in the Mains, with margins as narrow as 4–8 marks for a General category candidate, Shirin went into the IFS exam with a dose of healthy skepticism. She never anticipated a rank as high as AIR-4. In fact, doubt lingered until she actually saw her name on the final list.
“It was not only my preparation and sacrifice but the entire family’s. Every single member was equally involved in my highs and lows so securing AIR-4 felt like a major victory for everyone,” she exclaimed!
Talking about the interview guidance that she received, Shirin shared, “Mahesh Bhagwat sir’s group was very fruitful for me, especially the DAF discussions that Bhagwat sir did. My interview was on the first day itself and was mostly DAF-based so sir’s guidance helped me a lot in understanding how to go about the interview, which was my very first interview in the UPSC journey.
For the aspirants, Shirin had an important tip to share. She says, “Many aspirants do not consider this but it is very important to have a plan B in mind. This will also ensure better performance and help you succeed.”
