Indian Masterminds Stories

Every year, lakhs of aspirants take the UPSC Civil Services exam, one of the most challenging and competitive exams in the country. The exam tests not only knowledge but also perseverance, resilience, and a commitment to public service. Despite the grueling process, only a few make it to the coveted civil services, with the success rate standing at a mere 0.2 percent. This stark reality, however, doesn’t deter the relentless spirit of those who strive to make a difference.

In 2024, amidst the sea of aspirants, there were stories of courage, determination, and exceptional resilience that inspired not just the candidates, but the entire nation. Many officers who cleared this tough exam faced personal and professional hurdles that tested their mettle. From battling societal prejudices, overcoming financial constraints, to juggling personal challenges, these officers exemplified unwavering dedication.

One such officer displayed remarkable perseverance, despite losing a loved one during the preparation phase, using that immense pain as fuel to drive them forward. Another officer, who overcame the challenges of cerebral palsy, defied expectations and cleared the exam, proving that physical disabilities are no barrier to success when there is a relentless determination. Yet another officer, after six attempts at the UPSC exam, faced numerous setbacks but remained unshaken in her resolve. These stories of success aren’t just about cracking the exam; they reflect a journey filled with sacrifices, overcoming obstacles, and an unshakable belief in their ability to make a lasting impact.

Their courage, dedication, and exceptional journeys remind us that success in the UPSC exam is not merely about knowledge – it’s about resilience, discipline, and an unwavering desire to contribute meaningfully to the nation.

IRS Officer Neetika Vilash’s ‘Peepli Live’ Inspiration

Neetika Vilash’s journey from fashion designer to IRS officer is a tale of defying expectations and carving her own path. Raised in Lucknow, her father, an engineer, wanted her to follow suit, but Neetika’s passion for fashion led her to pursue a degree in design, despite it being considered unconventional. She excelled academically, earning gold medals and scholarships, but a movie, Peepli Live, made her realize how disconnected she was from the real world. Inspired to make a difference, she decided to pursue the UPSC exams while working as a book designer at Penguin Books.

Despite facing setbacks, her determination paid off, and by her third attempt, she successfully cleared the UPSC exam, securing a position in the Indian Revenue Service. As a Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, she continues to apply her design skills to improve operations. Balancing work and motherhood, Neetika’s story is a powerful message to aspirants: follow your passion, trust in your abilities, and always have a backup plan. Embarking on a Quest: A Journey of Redemption, From UPSC Setbacks to IFS Triumph

Pratiksha Nanasaheb Kale’s inspiring journey to becoming an Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer is one of resilience, perseverance, and adaptation. Initially set on becoming an IAS officer, Pratiksha faced numerous setbacks in her pursuit of the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE), with six attempts, including failures at the prelims and mains stages. Sarika AK Creates History, First Person with Cerebral Palsy To Crack UPSC CSE

Sarika AK’s journey to clearing the UPSC CSE in 2023 with an impressive All India Rank (AIR) of 922 is nothing short of inspiring. Born with cerebral palsy, a condition that severely affects her movement and posture, Sarika faced immense physical challenges, including limited use of her right hand and only three functional fingers. However, she refused to be deterred by her condition and pursued her dream of joining the civil services.

Sarika’s journey began after graduation when she joined the Chithrashalabham Project, which offers civil service coaching to students with disabilities. She faced several obstacles, including the difficulty of traveling with a wheelchair and the exhaustion of sitting through the week-long Mains examination. Despite these challenges, Sarika cleared the exam in her second attempt.

Her preparation was mostly done from home, using online resources. Sarika chose to study at night, a time when she felt most focused. She also used a scribe during the exams to compensate for her slower writing speed. Her parents were a strong pillar of support throughout her journey, traveling with her to exam centers and helping with logistics.

Sarika’s success story draws inspiration from the likes of Jessica Cox, the world’s first licensed armless pilot, showing that no obstacle is insurmountable with determination. Her future aspirations include advocating for the rights of differently-abled individuals and marginalized communities. As she aptly quotes from Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist, “When you really want something, the whole universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

Listening to Toppers Can Help Shape Your Own Strategy, Says Hemant Pareek

Hemant Pareek

Hemant Pareek’s decision to switch to Hindi during his UPSC interview was likely influenced by his comfort level with the language. Despite writing his Mains exam in English, Hemant felt that expressing himself in Hindi would be more natural for him during the interview. This decision highlights a key aspect of his approach: understanding his strengths and ensuring that he communicates effectively. By choosing Hindi, a language he was more comfortable with, he could articulate his thoughts more clearly, potentially giving him a better chance to showcase his personality and analytical skills, which are crucial during the interview stage.

This shift underscores the importance of being adaptable in the UPSC exam process. Even though he had written his Mains in English, he recognized that the interview is a more conversational experience, where the ability to communicate one’s thoughts clearly and confidently is paramount.
