Senior IAS officer Alka Tiwari, who recently took charge as Jharkhand’s third woman Chief Secretary, has made a significant decision regarding disaster management. In a high-level meeting, she proposed that losses caused by storms and heatwaves be declared a national disaster, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive relief measures.
A Distinguished Career in Civil Services
Originally from Uttar Pradesh, Alka Tiwari is a 1988-batch IAS officer known for her sharp administrative acumen. Before assuming her new role, she held several key positions in Jharkhand’s administration, including District Collector (DC) of Lohardaga and Gumla. She has also served as Secretary in the Forest, Environment, and Commerce Departments, contributing significantly to policy-making and governance.
Academic Excellence and Global Exposure
An exceptional student from the start, Tiwari earned a Gold Medal from Meerut University for her academic achievements. She pursued post-graduation in Psychology before obtaining an MSc from Manchester University, UK, where she again received a Gold Medal for her work in management and development projects. Additionally, she holds a law degree from Ranchi University and has completed short-term courses at Harvard University and Duke University.

Tiwari has played a crucial role in reforming India’s higher education regulatory system and has been a driving force in administrative improvements across Jharkhand.
