New Delhi: The weeks-long uncertainty surrounding the leadership of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a Maharatna public sector enterprise, is set to end, with the administrative ministry reportedly moving to formally declare the vacancy of the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) post.
According to sources, Amarendu Prakash, who had abruptly tendered his resignation on January 2, 2026, is expected to officially demit office on April 2, 2026, upon completion of the mandatory three-month notice period.
Finality at SAIL Leadership
While speculation had been rife in official and industry circles over the circumstances of his departure, sources now indicate that the competent authority has signalled acceptance of Prakash’s resignation, bringing closure to the issue.
With this, the CMD post at the Maharatna steel major is expected to be advertised shortly, marking the final word on a leadership episode that has sent ripples across the Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) ecosystem.

A Short-Lived but Significant Tenure
The development assumes particular significance given Amarendu Prakash’s professional trajectory.
- Appointed as CMD: June 2023
- Original tenure: Till superannuation in September 2030
Prakash was among the youngest executives to be appointed CMD of SAIL, a position considered one of the most influential roles in India’s core industrial sector. His early exit after just over two-and-a-half years at the helm underscores the complexities and pressures associated with leadership consolidation in high-profile PSU roles.
The Road Ahead: Search for a Successor
With the leadership question nearing closure, the focus now shifts to the future. The Ministry of Steel, in coordination with the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB), is expected to initiate the process of identifying Prakash’s successor.
The formal notification of vacancy is anticipated to end months of speculation and allow the steel major to move forward with greater administrative clarity at a time when the sector faces both market volatility and strategic transition.
