Guwahati: Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, an IAS officer of 1993 batch, has directed all concerned departments to accelerate relief distribution and restoration work across flood-hit areas as the state grapples with one of the worst spells of flooding this year. The instructions came after a high-level review of the flood situation, which has affected over 6.53 lakh people across 11 districts, while the overall death toll has climbed to 41.

The review meeting focused particularly on the severely affected districts of Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Golaghat, where flooding has disrupted normal life and damaged infrastructure.

Chief Secretary Reviews Flood Response

According to an official release issued on Wednesday, Ravi Kota instructed all line departments to expedite repair and restoration works while ensuring that relief operations continue without interruption.

He emphasised that essential supplies, relief materials, and basic services must reach all relief camps and flood-affected localities promptly.

The Chief Secretary also stressed the importance of close coordination among departments to ensure a swift and effective response aimed at minimising hardship for affected residents.

Central Agencies Asked to Step Up Assistance

Recognising the scale of the disaster, Ravi Kota urged central agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Indian Army, and the Indian Air Force, to intensify their assistance in relief, rescue, and restoration operations.

Their support is expected to strengthen efforts to restore connectivity, essential services, and emergency assistance in the worst-hit regions.

Flood Situation Worsens Across Assam

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the flood situation deteriorated sharply on Wednesday.

Key highlights include:

  • Over 6.53 lakh people affected across 11 districts
  • 10 deaths reported in the last 24 hours
  • Overall flood death toll this year rises to 41
  • Worst-hit districts include Sivasagar, Charaideo, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Hojai, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karbi Anglong, and Nagaon

The floods have inundated large areas, disrupted transport, damaged homes, and forced thousands of residents into relief camps.

More Rain Likely Over Next Four Days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall at isolated places across Assam over the next four days, raising concerns that the flood situation could worsen further.

Authorities have been asked to remain on high alert and ensure preparedness for any additional emergencies triggered by fresh rainfall.

Government Focus on Relief and Restoration

The Assam government has prioritised restoring essential infrastructure while ensuring uninterrupted delivery of food, drinking water, healthcare, and other basic services to affected communities.

With heavy rain expected to continue, the administration is working closely with disaster response agencies to strengthen rescue operations and minimise further loss of life and property.
