New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced the appointment of Avtar Singh Shahi as the Inspector General (IG) of the Border Security Force’s (BSF) Frontier Headquarters in Delhi, marking a significant move in the force’s top leadership.
Over Three Decades of Distinguished Service
Shahi, a career officer of the BSF, began his service as an Assistant Commandant and has steadily risen through the ranks over the course of more than 30 years. His previous posting was as IG of Frontier Headquarters – Special Operations in Odisha, a role that saw him coordinate sensitive and high-stakes missions.
Known for his operational acumen, Shahi has led counter-infiltration and counter-terrorism operations in some of the most challenging regions of the country — from Kashmir to southern India. He has held multiple field commands in both border security and internal security roles.
Honoured with President’s Police Medals
In August 2025, Shahi was awarded the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, one of India’s most prestigious policing honours. He had earlier been awarded the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2018.
