New Delhi: Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has appointed defence sector veteran Shailesh Vagerwal as its new Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), effective July 9, 2026.
The leadership change follows an official appointment order issued by the Ministry of Defence on June 18, 2026. BDL informed the stock exchanges, including the National Stock Exchange of India and BSE Limited, through a formal regulatory disclosure signed by Company Secretary N. Nagaraja.
The company confirmed that Shailesh Vagerwal has no personal or professional relationship with any other members of the BDL Board and is eligible to hold the position under applicable SEBI regulations.
Shailesh Vagerwal’s Defence Sector Career and Experience
Shailesh Vagerwal is a senior officer of the Indian Ordnance Factories Service (IOFS) with nearly three decades of experience in the defence manufacturing sector.
Before joining BDL as CMD, he served as the Chief General Manager at Ordnance Factory Khamaria, Jabalpur, a key facility under Munitions India Limited.
During his long career, Vagerwal has worked in several important defence manufacturing establishments, including:
- Ordnance Factory Dum Dum
- Ordnance Factory Itarsi
- Ordnance Factory Khamaria
- Munitions India Limited Corporate Office, Pune
His extensive experience covers ammunition and explosives manufacturing, strategic planning, administration, quality management, research and development, project execution and defence production operations.
Educational Qualifications
Shailesh Vagerwal has strong technical and specialised academic qualifications in engineering and defence technology.
His educational background includes:
- Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) from MBM Engineering College, Jodhpur.
- Master of Science in Explosive Ordnance Engineering from Cranfield University, United Kingdom.
His specialised education and professional experience have contributed to his expertise in defence production and strategic manufacturing management.
Expertise in Defence Manufacturing and Strategic Operations
Throughout his career, Vagerwal has handled several critical responsibilities in the defence sector, including:
- Ammunition and explosives production management
- Materials management
- Quality control systems
- Industrial relations
- Infrastructure and civil construction projects

Appointment Cleared Under Regulatory Guidelines
According to the company’s stock exchange filing, Shailesh Vagerwal has assumed charge as CMD of BDL from July 9, 2026.
The disclosure also stated that he has not been barred from holding office by any order of SEBI or any other regulatory authority. The appointment has been completed following all required government and corporate procedures.
