Bihar Floods: Over 47 Lakh People Affected as State Expands Relief Operations Across 15 Districts

Flooding has affected 47.33 lakh people across 15 Bihar districts, with 1,221 community kitchens providing food and 15 relief camps accommodating more than 12,000 people.

Patna: Flooding has affected 47.33 lakh people across 15 districts of Bihar, prompting the state government to intensify relief and rescue operations across 566 affected gram panchayats.

The Disaster Management Department said relief measures have been expanded to provide food, dry ration, fodder, milk for children and medicines to people in flood-affected areas.

59.73 Lakh Meals Served Through Community Kitchens

A total of 1,221 community kitchens are operating across the affected districts. According to the department, more than 59.73 lakh people have been provided meals through these facilities.

The state has also established 15 relief camps, where arrangements for accommodation, food and immediate medical assistance have been made for 12,260 people.

Relief measures reported by the department include:

  • 59.73 lakh-plus people provided meals.
  • 12,260 people accommodated in relief camps.
  • More than 3.13 lakh polythene sheets distributed.
  • Over 48,400 dry ration packets distributed.
  • 10,823 quintals of cattle fodder distributed.
  • 1,876 government boats deployed for relief operations.

15 Districts Affected by Flooding

The affected districts include Patna, Bhojpur, Saran, Vaishali, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Buxar, Samastipur, Munger, Katihar, Lakhisarai, Khagaria, Purnia, Madhepura and Arwal.

The department said 27 SDRF teams and 10 NDRF teams have been deployed in different districts for relief and rescue operations.

Several Rivers Remain Above Danger Mark

The Disaster Management Department said water levels in several rivers have remained stable or declined, although increases have been recorded near some barrages.

The Gandak has recorded a rise near Valmikinagar Barrage, while the Kosi has risen near Birpur Barrage. In contrast, the water level of the Son at Indrapuri Barrage has continued to decline.

Several rivers are still flowing above the danger mark at different locations.

Locations where rivers remain above the danger level include:

  • Gandak at Dumariaghat
  • Kosi at Baltara and Kursela
  • Budhi Gandak at Khagaria
  • Ganga at Digha, Gandhi Ghat and Hathidah in Patna, as well as Bhagalpur, Kahalgaon and Munger
  • Punpun at Sripalpur
  • Bagmati at Benibad
  • Ghaghra at Darauli and Gangpur Siswan

The Disaster Management Department said it is regularly monitoring the situation as relief and rescue operations continue across the affected areas.
