Patna: The Sugarcane Industry Department of Bihar has announced that online applications for setting up jaggery (gur) production units will be accepted until June 25. The initiative is part of the state’s broader effort to promote sugarcane-based industries and boost rural income through value-added agro-processing.
Under the Bihar State Jaggery Industry Promotion Programme, eligible farmers and investors will receive financial assistance ranging from ₹6 lakh to ₹1 crore based on production capacity.
Government Push to Promote Sugarcane-Based Industries
The government is actively promoting sugarcane cultivation and related industries alongside the traditional sugar sector. Several subsidy schemes are already in place to support farmers engaged in sugarcane farming.
The newly launched jaggery promotion programme aims to encourage small and large-scale entrepreneurs to set up production units within the state, strengthening rural industrial development.

- 21 to 40 tonnes/day capacity: Up to ₹15 lakh subsidy
- 41 to 60 tonnes/day capacity: Up to ₹45 lakh subsidy
- Above 60 tonnes/day capacity: Up to ₹1 crore subsidy

The last date for submitting applications for the financial year 2026–27 (first phase) has been fixed as June 25, 2026.
Applicants are advised to complete the process within the deadline to be considered for the subsidy scheme.
Focus on Rural Entrepreneurship and Value Addition
The scheme is expected to boost rural entrepreneurship by enabling farmers to diversify income sources beyond raw sugarcane production. By encouraging jaggery manufacturing, the government aims to increase value addition within the agricultural supply chain.
Officials believe this initiative will not only strengthen the rural economy but also generate local employment opportunities in processing and allied sectors.
Boost for Agro-Based Industrial Growth in Bihar
With substantial subsidies and a structured application process, Bihar’s jaggery production scheme is set to encourage greater investment in agro-processing units. The initiative reflects the state’s focus on expanding sugarcane-based industries and promoting sustainable rural economic development.
