Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has outlined an ambitious Vision 2030 for the state’s fisheries sector, with a target of raising annual fish production to 50,200 metric tonnes and strengthening Bihar’s position as a leading inland fisheries state.
The initiative seeks to give fresh momentum to fisheries and aquaculture by improving production, strengthening infrastructure and supporting livelihoods linked to fish farming.
Key focus areas under Vision 2030
- 50,200 MT: Target for annual fish production under the Vision 2030 roadmap.
- Inland fisheries: Greater emphasis on expanding fish production through Bihar’s inland water resources and aquaculture potential.
- Modern aquaculture: Promotion of improved technologies and farming practices to raise productivity.
- Infrastructure: Strengthening facilities connected with fish production, seed supply, markets and post-harvest management.
- Livelihoods: Expanding opportunities and incomes for fish farmers and communities dependent on fisheries.

Bihar’s growing fisheries potential
Bihar has considerable potential for inland fisheries and aquaculture, supported by its ponds, wetlands, rivers and other freshwater resources.
Earlier assessments have also highlighted opportunities to expand aquaculture through better use of wetlands, improved fish seed, technology adoption, hatcheries and stronger marketing infrastructure.
Strengthening Fisheries and Livelihoods
The state has also been pursuing fisheries development through schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), which supports infrastructure, aquaculture expansion, technology infusion and other interventions across India.
The Vision 2030 roadmap is therefore aimed at moving Bihar towards a more productive and organised inland fisheries sector, while creating greater economic opportunities for fish farmers and strengthening the state’s contribution to food security and rural livelihoods.
