New Delhi: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has inaugurated a state-of-the-art 71 MWp Solar Power Plant in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The plant, which was virtually inaugurated by Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, during the India Energy Week, marks a significant milestone in BPCL’s efforts to transition to renewable energy and contribute to India’s sustainable energy future.

Key Features of the Solar Power Plant

The newly inaugurated solar power plant has an installed capacity of 71 MWp (DC) and 52 MW (AC). The facility is expected to generate around 103.61 million units of green electricity annually. This contribution will play a crucial role in BPCL’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and promote cleaner energy solutions.

  • Annual Green Energy Generation: 103.61 million units
  • Carbon Emissions Reduction: 75,150 metric tonnes per year, equivalent to planting 1.25 crore trees
  • Facility Size: 210 acres
  • Solar Modules Used: 1.29 lakh solar modules
  • Structural Steel: 1,324 metric tonnes
  • Cabling Infrastructure: Approximately 294 kilometres

Environmental Impact and Sustainability

The solar plant’s capacity is expected to reduce carbon emissions by over 75,000 metric tonnes annually, aligning with BPCL’s sustainability targets. This reduction is equivalent to planting nearly 1.25 crore trees, further enhancing the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship and green energy solutions.

The project supports BPCL’s broader mission of cleaner energy by integrating renewable power into its operations, significantly lowering its reliance on fossil fuels. The green electricity generated by the plant will be supplied to BPCL’s refineries in Mumbai, Bina, and Kochi, contributing to sustainable operations across the company’s refining facilities.

Efficient Power Transmission and Grid Connectivity

The solar power plant is connected to the power grid via a 132 kV transmission line, ensuring the efficient and reliable transmission of renewable electricity. This setup ensures that the green energy produced by the plant is effectively distributed to BPCL’s refineries, reinforcing the company’s operational sustainability.

BPCL’s Commitment to Renewable Energy and Sustainability

This solar power plant reflects BPCL’s commitment to integrating renewable energy into its core operations. The project is part of BPCL’s ongoing efforts to contribute to India’s energy transition goals, reducing carbon emissions, and advancing a sustainable energy future.
