New Delhi: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has won the Green Hydrogen Project of the Year – India award at the Asian Oil & Gas Awards 2026 for its pioneering 5 MW Green Hydrogen Plant at Bina Refinery in Madhya Pradesh. The project marks a significant milestone in BPCL’s energy transition journey and supports India’s efforts to develop a low-carbon, hydrogen-based economy.
The project aligns with the Government of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and the country’s Net Zero 2070 vision. It also supports BPCL’s commitment to reducing its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2040.
BPCL Commissions 5 MW Green Hydrogen Plant at Bina Refinery
BPCL has successfully commissioned the 5 MW Green Hydrogen Plant at Bina Refinery, making it one of the largest refinery-integrated green hydrogen facilities in India. The project was executed within just 15 months, highlighting the company’s focus on timely project delivery and operational excellence.
The facility uses advanced alkaline water electrolysis technology to produce 2.15 metric tonnes of green hydrogen per day, with an energy consumption of 50.75 kWh per kilogram of hydrogen.
The plant is equipped with two state-of-the-art alkaline electrolysers and an advanced purification system capable of delivering hydrogen with a purity of 99.999%. These technologies enable the production of high-purity green hydrogen for integration into refinery operations.

Green Hydrogen Plant to Reduce Carbon Emissions
Powered entirely by renewable energy, the Bina facility will serve as an important platform for demonstrating the technical viability of integrating green hydrogen into refinery operations.
The project enables the direct replacement of conventionally produced grey hydrogen with green hydrogen. This transition is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 9,000 metric tonnes annually, contributing to industrial decarbonisation and BPCL’s emissions-reduction targets.
The plant will also help demonstrate the potential for wider adoption of green hydrogen technology across the refining sector, supporting the transition towards cleaner industrial processes.
Project Supports India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission
As one of India’s early large-scale green hydrogen initiatives in the refining sector, the project reinforces BPCL’s role in the country’s energy transition.
By integrating renewable energy with hydrogen production, the facility supports the objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and contributes to India’s long-term Net Zero 2070 vision. It also strengthens energy sustainability and demonstrates how green hydrogen can help reduce the carbon footprint of energy-intensive industries.
The commissioning of the plant reflects BPCL’s commitment to sustainable growth, technological advancement and operational excellence while supporting the development of a hydrogen-based economy in India.
Asian Oil & Gas Awards Recognise Energy Sector Excellence
The Asian Oil & Gas Awards recognise organisations that demonstrate excellence and measurable impact across the oil and gas value chain.
The awards highlight companies implementing successful strategies to adapt to evolving industry conditions, advance digital transformation and overcome challenges in a demanding operating environment.
BPCL’s recognition for its Bina Green Hydrogen Plant highlights the significance of its investment in clean energy technologies and its contribution to the transformation of India’s refining sector.
