CBDT Transfer Order 2026: Hundreds of CIT and DIT Officers Promoted, Transferred and Assigned Additional Charges

New Delhi: In one of the most extensive administrative overhauls in recent years, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has issued a sweeping transfer and posting order affecting a large number of officers in the rank of Commissioner of Income Tax (CIT) and Director of Income Tax (DIT). The order, released on Monday, May 18, 2026, includes promotions, routine transfers, inter-regional postings, deputation reviews, and additional charge assignments across almost every region of the country.

The postings have been made with immediate effect and will remain in force until further orders.

Major Nationwide Administrative Exercise by CBDT

The latest order covers three broad categories:

  • Promotion Cases – Officers elevated and posted to new assignments.
  • MTL/RL Cases – Mutual transfer, routine transfer and retention at the same station.
  • Other Cases – Fresh transfers and posting adjustments.
  • Additional Charge Arrangements – Officers assigned extra responsibilities in vacant positions.

The exercise impacts officers posted in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Patna, Guwahati, Kochi, and several other stations.

CBDT promoted a substantial number of officers and assigned them to key roles in appellate, audit, judicial, exemptions, systems, international tax and investigation wings.

Several officers were not assigned immediate field postings and will be reviewed upon their return from deputation or study leave during Annual General Transfer (AGT) 2027.

In the MTL/RL category, CBDT issued numerous routine transfer and retention orders.

  • Chabungba M. Deepak Singh posted as CIT (Admin. & TPS), Kolkata.
  • Battula Bala Krishna posted as CIT (IT & TP), Hyderabad.
