Patna: Bihar has stepped up preparations for Census 2027, directing officials across the state to ensure accurate collection of data on every village and town. The exercise, being carried out under the District Census Handbook (DCHB)-2027, aims to build a comprehensive database of civic infrastructure, public services and other key indicators that will support future planning and policy decisions.
A state-level review meeting was held through video conferencing on Wednesday under the joint chairmanship of Director of Census Operations-cum-Principal Census Officer, Bihar, Ranjita, and Additional Secretary, Revenue and Land Reforms Department, Dr Mahendra Pal. District Census Officers and officials from all districts participated in the meeting.
Every Village and Town to Be Mapped
Officials have been instructed to collect updated information on essential public facilities, including:
- Education and healthcare institutions
- Drinking water and sanitation
- Roads and transport connectivity
- Banking and communication services
- Agriculture and urban amenities
The government has stressed that the information must be accurate, regularly verified and collected in coordination with all concerned departments.

Fieldwork to Continue Till August 30
According to officials, the field survey for DCHB-2027 will continue until August 30, 2026. Training of field functionaries has already been completed, and the focus is now on ensuring timely completion of the exercise.
Officials were also briefed on the use of the Village Directory (VD) and Town Directory (TD) formats, along with the mobile application and web portal that will be used for data collection and uploading.
Strong Focus on Data Security
The state government has directed officials to maintain strict confidentiality during the exercise. They have been asked to keep login credentials secure, use only authorised platforms for data sharing and immediately report any technical or cybersecurity issues through the designated escalation system.

The District Census Handbook serves as an important reference for policymakers, administrators and researchers by providing detailed information on local infrastructure and socio-economic conditions. Accurate data collected during the Census 2027 exercise will help governments identify development gaps, improve public service delivery and prepare evidence-based plans for both rural and urban areas.
The review meeting was attended by senior officials of the Census Directorate, including Deputy Director Sanjeev Kumar Sahu, IT Manager Anand Shankar, Branch Officer Narayan, besides Municipal Commissioners, Block Development Officers and Executive Officers from across Bihar.
