Under the revised procurement policy, sugar mills across Chhattisgarh have been directed to purchase sugarcane from growers at Rs 425 per quintal instead of the previous rate of Rs 355 per quintal.
The enhanced procurement price applies to sugarcane purchased during the 2025-26 crushing season. The move is expected to provide additional financial support to growers and improve the returns they receive for their produce.

Decision Follows Meeting With Bharatiya Kisan Union Delegation
The announcement came after Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai met a delegation of the Bharatiya Kisan Union in Chhattisgarh on Saturday.
During the meeting, the government decided to revise the sugarcane procurement price to provide better financial returns to growers.
The state government primarily supports sugarcane farmers through higher procurement and support prices paid through cooperative sugar mills, rather than relying on direct input subsidies.
Chhattisgarh Has Four Cooperative Sugar Mills
Chhattisgarh has four cooperative sugar mills operating across the state. These mills play an important role in procuring sugarcane from local farmers and supporting the state’s sugar industry.
The state produces approximately 1.86 million to 2.04 million tonnes of sugarcane annually, although production varies from year to year.
According to the figures provided, Chhattisgarh’s sugarcane production recently stood at 1,866,000 tonnes, down from 2,041,000 tonnes in the preceding year.
- Latest production: 1.866 million tonnes
- Previous year’s production: 2.041 million tonnes
- Year-on-year decline: Approximately 175,000 tonnes, or 8.6%
Sugarcane Cultivation Covers Up to 35,000 Hectares
Sugarcane cultivation in Chhattisgarh covers approximately 31,000 to 35,000 hectares of agricultural land. The state’s average sugarcane yield ranges from 55.9 to 60 tonnes per hectare.
The major sugarcane-growing and sugar-producing centres in Chhattisgarh include Kabirdham (Kawardha), Surajpur and Balod. These districts contribute to the state’s sugarcane cultivation and sugar industry.
Sugar Mill Shareholders Receive Additional Benefits
Apart from the higher procurement price, farmers associated with cooperative sugar mills also receive additional welfare benefits.
According to the information provided, shareholder farmers connected with these mills are eligible for subsidised sugar. They receive a 50-kg bag of sugar at a rate of Rs 30 per kg.
These benefits form part of the support extended to farmers associated with the cooperative sugar mill system in Chhattisgarh.
Higher Procurement Price Aims to Strengthen Farmers’ Income
The increase in the sugarcane procurement price from Rs 355 to Rs 425 per quintal is part of the Chhattisgarh government’s efforts to improve the financial position of sugarcane growers.
By directing sugar mills to implement the revised rate for the 2025-26 crushing season, the state government aims to ensure better returns for farmers and make sugarcane cultivation a more attractive livelihood.
The impact of the higher price will depend on the quantity of sugarcane procured at the revised rate and the production levels achieved during the crushing season.
