New Delhi: Coal India Ltd has entered into a contract with BEML Ltd for the trial induction of indigenously developed 485 HP Wheel Dozers (BD46W-1). The agreement marks an important step toward strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities in India’s mining equipment sector and reducing reliance on imported machinery.

The announcement was made in New Delhi on 18 June 2026, highlighting the government’s continued push toward self-reliance under the broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Trial Induction of Indigenous Wheel Dozers Begins

As part of the agreement, Coal India will introduce BEML’s newly developed BD46W-1 wheel dozer, powered by a 485 HP engine, into trial operations at mining sites.

The trial phase will evaluate the machine’s performance, durability, and efficiency in real mining conditions before wider deployment.

Coal India stated that the move represents a key milestone in increasing the use of indigenously developed heavy equipment in its operations.

Focus on Import Substitution and Local Manufacturing

The collaboration reflects a broader push by public sector enterprises to reduce import dependency in critical industrial sectors such as mining.

Officials noted that promoting domestic equipment manufacturing will not only improve self-reliance but also support India’s engineering and industrial ecosystem.

However, neither company disclosed the financial details of the contract.

Strengthening India’s Mining Equipment Ecosystem

BEML, a leading public sector engineering company, has designed the BD46W-1 wheel dozer as part of its efforts to develop advanced indigenous mining machinery.

Coal India’s adoption of such equipment is expected to encourage further innovation and localization within the mining technology sector.

The initiative also supports government efforts to strengthen India’s manufacturing base and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.

The contract between Coal India and BEML marks an important step in advancing India’s self-reliance in heavy mining equipment. The trial induction of indigenous wheel dozers is expected to help improve operational efficiency while promoting domestic industrial growth under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.
