Delhi: Coal India Limited (CIL) is accelerating the transformation of India’s coal mining sector from conventional mining methods to smart, technology-driven and increasingly sustainable operations. The company is deploying technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics, automation, remote monitoring and digital platforms across exploration, mining, coal evacuation, processing and environmental management.
The technology-led transformation is aimed at improving operational efficiency, increasing coal recovery, reducing workers’ exposure to hazards and enabling predictive maintenance and data-driven decision-making.
Technology Transformation Begins with Smarter Exploration
CIL is using both invasive and non-invasive technologies for coal exploration.
Core drilling continues to be used for resource identification, while 2D and 3D seismic surveys are helping reduce the requirement for boreholes by up to 50%.
The company is also using Spectral Enhancement (SPE) assaying to improve determination efficiency. Machine-learning techniques, including Support Vector Machines (SVM), Decision Trees, Random Forest, Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and XGBoost, are being used to interpret coal seams through Gamma-ray, Density and Resistivity logs.
The Central Mine Planning & Design Institute (CMPDI) is deploying:
- Remote sensing
- GIS
- LiDAR
- Drones
- Bathymetric surveys
These technologies are being used during pre-mining, mining and post-mining stages.
CIL has also signed an MoU with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) to develop an AI-powered satellite-based geospatial dashboard for mine monitoring and environmental auditing.

Open-Cast Mines Adopt Advanced Mining Equipment
CIL is progressively deploying high-capacity Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM) across its open-cast mines.
The equipment includes:
- 42 cubic metre shovels
- 240-tonne dumpers
- Draglines
- Surface miners
Surface miners and other blast-free technologies have been standardised since 2021. These technologies help reduce dust, noise and vibration, while also improving coal quality and reducing coal losses.
CIL has also phased out conventional electric detonators during 2024-25 and moved towards ultra-safe electronic detonators.
AI-Based Safety Systems Strengthen Mine Operations
Technology is also being deployed to improve safety for mine workers and equipment operators.
Major HEMM are being equipped with AI-based safety systems such as:
- Operator fatigue monitoring
- Proximity warning systems
- 360-degree cameras
- Automatic fire detection and suppression
CIL is also using AI simulators and Virtual Reality (VR)-based training to improve operator skills and safety preparedness.
Digital systems such as GPS-based truck dispatch, Optimised Integrated Truck Dispatch System (OITDS), Payload Monitoring System (PLMS) and Vehicle Health Monitoring System (VHMS) are helping improve equipment utilisation and operational efficiency.
Underground Mining Moves Towards Higher Technology
CIL is targeting underground coal production of around 100 million tonnes (MT) through the adoption of advanced technologies.
The company is using Continuous Miners and expanding the deployment of Longwall and Highwall mining technologies.
Large-scale Longwall technology is now being introduced, while significant investments are planned in Paste Fill technology. This can help recover high-grade coal that remains locked in pillars.
CIL is also focusing on improved mine ventilation and strata management to strengthen safety in underground operations.
First Mile Connectivity to Transform Coal Evacuation
CIL is modernising coal evacuation infrastructure through First Mile Connectivity (FMC) projects and critical railway infrastructure.
Out of 92 planned FMC projects, 46 have already been commissioned. These projects integrate:
- Coal Handling Plants (CHPs)
- Silos
- Conveyors
- Rapid Loading Systems
The commissioned projects have created around 432 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of capacity.
The overall FMC programme involves an investment of approximately ₹27,800 crore and aims to create 994 million tonnes per year (MTY) of mechanical loading capacity by FY 2029-30.
CIL is also developing seven critical railway projects involving around ₹23,465 crore. Four of these projects have been commissioned, while the remaining projects are targeted for completion by FY 2027-28.
The company is also adopting high-angle and sandwich conveyors for in-pit coal transportation as an alternative to conventional HEMM-based transportation.
Coal Processing and Environmental Management
CIL is deploying advanced coal beneficiation technologies across its washeries.
These include:
- Heavy Media Cyclones
- Hydro Cyclones
- Teeter Bed Separators
- Reflux Classifiers
- Jigs
The company is also strengthening environmental monitoring and adopting cleaner and more efficient technologies across its operations.
Real-time monitoring is becoming an important part of CIL’s environmental management strategy.
Digital Transformation Through IT and Smart Mine Systems
CIL’s digital transformation is based on two major pillars — Operational Technology (OT) and Enterprise IT.
Under Operational Technology, the company has deployed Integrated Command and Control Centres (ICCCs), vehicle tracking systems, RFID systems, automated weighbridges and GPS-based fleet monitoring.
The DigiCoal pilot programme has been implemented across seven mines, with 17 digital solutions being tested.
On the Enterprise IT side, CIL has implemented:
- SAP S/4HANA
- e-Office
- Cloud infrastructure
- Data analytics
These systems are integrating functions such as procurement, inventory, finance and human resources, while enabling paperless file movement and faster decision-making.
CIL’s Future Roadmap: Autonomous and Low-Carbon Mining
CIL’s next phase of technological transformation focuses on intelligent, autonomous and low-carbon mining.
Remote-operated Line-of-Sight dozers are being piloted in SECL and NCL. The approximate cost is ₹2 crore per equipment.
The company is also planning electric mobility and Trolley Assist technology for 190-tonne-plus diesel-electric dumpers.
CIL is working with IIT Madras on the safe electrification of fossil-fuel-powered mining equipment.
In underground mines, technologies such as 5G networks, digital twins and autonomous monitoring rovers are being developed to support communication, automation, monitoring and simulation.
Smart Conveyors and Cleaner Coal Processing
CIL is developing smart conveyor systems equipped with PLC-based Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI) and IoT-enabled monitoring.
These systems will enable real-time monitoring of:
- Conveyor speed
- Load
- Temperature
- Equipment performance
The objective is to enable remote command and control and support predictive maintenance.
The company is also exploring dry coal beneficiation technologies, including:
- Air Table
- Dry Jigging
- Coal Winnowing
- XRT sorting
These technologies could help improve coal processing while reducing dependence on water-intensive processes.
AI and Satellite Technology for Environmental Monitoring
CIL is strengthening environmental monitoring through real-time Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Systems (CAAQMS) and Continuous Emission Quality Monitoring Systems (CEQMS).
The company is also exploring AI-based dust prediction, along with GIS, satellite and drone-based monitoring.
Other initiatives include:
- Zero Liquid Discharge systems
- Large-scale utilisation of overburden for sand
- Digital monitoring of mine closure
- Afforestation monitoring
- Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) monitoring
The Bhuvan Geospatial Dashboard, being developed with NRSC, will support monitoring of coal fires, mine closure, afforestation and R&R activities.
5G, AI and IoT to Create Connected Mines
CIL’s digital roadmap includes the deployment of 5G, IoT, AI and machine learning, edge computing and advanced automation.
These technologies are expected to enable:
- Real-time operational monitoring
- Predictive maintenance
- Remote operations
- Automated decision-making
- Connected mining equipment
The 17 DigiCoal solutions tested across seven mines are planned for replication across all mega mines.
CIL is also strengthening its Information Security Management System (ISMS) as mining operations become increasingly connected and digital.
R&D Focus Shifts from Concepts to Commercial Prototypes
CIL’s research and development activities gained further momentum in FY 2024-25 with the establishment of the National Centre for Coal and Energy Research (NaCCER).
The hub-and-spoke research structure is designed to move projects beyond proof-of-concept towards prototype development at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4 and above.
Three Centres of Excellence are supporting the programme:
- CLEANZ – IIT Hyderabad
- Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) – IIT Madras
- IMiN – IIT-ISM Dhanbad
Together, these centres host 13 high-TRL and 11 low-TRL projects.
Key projects include:
- Underground Coal Gasification at Kasta, ECL
- 5G deployment in open-cast and underground mines
- Indigenous Perovskite Solar Cells with IIT Bombay
- 500-tonne Self-Advancing Goaf Edge Supports (SAGES) at Churcha Underground Mine, SECL
₹1,900 Crore R&D Investment Planned by FY2030
CIL has outlined an ambitious R&D roadmap with an investment of approximately ₹1,900 crore by FY2030.
The roadmap includes pilot-scale facilities for:
- Coal gasification
- Battery recycling
- Coal-based membranes
CIL also plans to establish new Centres of Excellence at IIT Bombay, IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Delhi, along with a dedicated research centre in the North-East.
Other proposed projects include a Pilot Integrated Coal Refinery Complex, a permanent NaCCER centre, hydrokinetic pumped storage, coated spherical purified graphite and dry coal beneficiation.
Challenges Remain for India’s Smart Mining Transition
Despite rapid technological progress, the Indian mining sector continues to face challenges, including high capital requirements, availability of skilled manpower and the need to adapt global technologies to India’s diverse geological conditions.
CIL’s long-term strategy is therefore focused on combining automation, robotics, AI, digital technologies and green mining solutions with workforce development and research.
The transition from conventional mining to smart mining is expected to create a more safe, efficient, connected and sustainable coal production ecosystem, while supporting India’s long-term energy and industrial requirements.
