CPCL Q1 FY27 Results: Net Profit Surges to ₹1,016.67 Crore, GRM Climbs to $8.78 per Barrel

Chennai: Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) has reported a strong financial turnaround in the first quarter of financial year 2026-27 (Q1FY27), posting a standalone net profit of ₹1,016.67 crore compared to a net loss of ₹56.62 crore in the corresponding quarter last year.

The company’s performance was supported by improved refining margins, higher revenue, and a one-time benefit arising from retrospective price revision of petroleum products.

According to the company’s exchange filing, CPCL’s revenue from operations increased 57% year-on-year to ₹29,358.75 crore in Q1FY27, compared with ₹18,683.36 crore in Q1FY26.

Key standalone financial performance of CPCL during April-June 2026:

  • Net Profit: ₹1,016.67 crore
    • Against a loss of ₹56.62 crore in Q1FY26.
  • Total Income: ₹29,376.45 crore
    • Up 57% from ₹18,692.61 crore a year ago.
  • Profit Before Tax (PBT): ₹1,365.56 crore
    • Compared with a loss of ₹80.10 crore in Q1FY26.
  • Basic Earnings Per Share (EPS): ₹68.27
    • Improved from a loss of ₹3.80 per share in the previous year.
  • Crude Throughput: 2.848 million metric tonnes (MMT)
    • Lower compared with 2.981 MMT in Q1FY26.

Gross Refining Margin Improves Sharply to $8.78 per Barrel

CPCL recorded a significant improvement in its refining performance during the quarter.

The company’s Average Gross Refining Margin (GRM) for April-June 2026 stood at:

  • Q1FY27 GRM: $8.78 per barrel
  • Q1FY26 GRM: $3.22 per barrel

The company clarified that the GRM calculation excludes a one-time gain of ₹385.21 crore related to retrospective price revision of petroleum products effective from March 16, 2026.

The additional revenue was recognised during the quarter for supplies made in March 2026.

Revenue Growth Driven by Strong Refining Performance

CPCL’s strong revenue growth was supported by improved refining margins and operational efficiency.

The company reported:

  • Revenue from operations: ₹29,358.75 crore
  • Total income: ₹29,376.45 crore
  • Total expenses: ₹28,010.89 crore

Although revenue increased significantly, profitability declined compared with the previous quarter due to higher expenses.

The cost of materials consumed increased to:

  • ₹25,708.27 crore in Q1FY27
  • Compared with ₹14,803.34 crore in Q4FY26

During the quarter:

  • The company reported no default on loans or debt securities.
  • No outstanding Non-Convertible Debentures (NCDs) were reported as of the reporting date.

The company continues to focus on improving refining efficiency and maintaining operational performance amid changing market conditions.

Auditor Raises Corporate Governance Observations

The statutory auditor R.G.N. Price & Co. issued an unmodified opinion on CPCL’s standalone and consolidated financial statements.

However, the auditor highlighted certain corporate governance-related observations:

  • The company did not have the required number of Independent Directors during the quarter.
  • The position of Woman Independent Director was also vacant.
  • The Audit Committee and Nomination & Remuneration Committee did not meet the required two-thirds independent director composition.

CPCL stated that the appointments are under consideration by the Government of India.
