New Delhi: India is preparing to strengthen its defence partnership with Brazil as a Brazilian military delegation arrives in New Delhi for a two-week visit. The India-Brazil Defence Cooperation programme will focus on Indian missile systems, military technology, defence manufacturing and future industrial partnerships.
The delegation is expected to examine India’s BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, Akash air defence system and other indigenous defence platforms. The visit could create new opportunities for defence exports, technology cooperation and joint manufacturing between the two countries.
Details of Brazil Military Delegation India Visit
According to the report, more than two dozen officers from the Brazilian Army Command and General Staff School are scheduled to arrive in New Delhi on Monday.
The visit aims to strengthen military relations between India and Brazil. It will also provide Brazilian officers with an opportunity to understand India’s defence capabilities and explore possible areas of cooperation.
During the two-week programme, the delegation is expected to meet senior Indian Army officials and other defence stakeholders.
The officers will also visit important defence facilities, including BrahMos Aerospace, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Tata Advanced Systems in Bengaluru. The programme will allow the Brazilian military to examine Indian defence equipment and understand its possible applications for Brazil’s armed forces.
What are the Key Focus Areas of Brazil Military Delegation India Visit
The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and Akash surface-to-air missile system are expected to be among the major attractions during the visit. Brazil is exploring different defence equipment options to strengthen its military capabilities and diversify its defence suppliers.
BrahMos Missile Could Strengthen India’s Defence Exports
The BrahMos missile is jointly developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPOM. According to DRDO, BrahMos is a long-range supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from land, sea and air platforms. Its variants are designed for anti-ship and land-attack missions.
The missile is already operational with the Indian Army and Indian Navy. Brazil’s interest in BrahMos is connected to its maritime security requirements and its long Atlantic coastline.
The missile’s anti-ship and precision-strike capabilities could make it relevant to Brazil’s future defence planning. However, any possible purchase would require further technical evaluation, discussions and negotiations. The visit does not confirm that Brazil has decided to buy the missile.
Brazil Examines India’s Akash Air Defence System
India’s Akash air defence system is another important platform expected to attract attention during the visit. The system was developed by DRDO and is manufactured with the participation of Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL). Bharat Electronics Limited supplies important radar and electronic subsystems.
Brazil is examining air defence options under its Medium/High Altitude Air Defence Artillery programme. The Brazilian Army has previously explored the possibility of acquiring Akash through government-to-government arrangements.
During the visit, officers are expected to examine the missile system, radar equipment and command-and-control technologies. The programme could also provide opportunities to discuss industrial cooperation and possible participation by Brazilian companies.
India And Brazil Explore Defence Manufacturing Cooperation
India and Brazil are increasingly interested in developing stronger defence industrial partnerships. Both countries are exploring opportunities beyond traditional defence equipment purchases.
The broader relationship includes discussions about joint production, technology cooperation, local manufacturing and stronger defence supply chains.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva have also supported greater industrial collaboration between the two countries.
Brazil Military Delegation India Visit: Garuda 105 V2 Artillery System Could Be Another Area Of Interest
Brazil’s interest in Indian defence technology also extends to artillery systems. The Garuda 105 V2 is an ultralight artillery system developed by Kalyani Strategic Systems, part of Bharat Forge.
The system is designed for rapid deployment and combines mobility with digital fire control and a modular configuration. These features could be useful for military operations in difficult terrain, including remote areas of the Amazon region.
The Brazilian delegation’s visit could provide an opportunity to understand the system and examine its possible applications.
Maritime Cooperation Between India And Brazil
Maritime security is another important part of India-Brazil defence relations. Both countries have discussed cooperation involving naval platforms, submarine maintenance, coastal surveillance and shipbuilding.
A memorandum of understanding involving the Indian Navy, Brazilian Navy and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited provides a framework for cooperation in maintaining Scorpène-class submarines and other military vessels.
Brazil has also expressed interest in Indian offshore patrol vessels, coastal surveillance equipment and battlefield communication technologies. Earlier discussions included opportunities for joint warship construction and exchanges of shipbuilding expertise.
These areas could support stronger naval cooperation and improve defence industry connections between the two countries.
India-Brazil Naval Exercise IBSAMAR IX 2026
The Brazilian military delegation’s visit follows Exercise IBSAMAR IX 2026, a trilateral naval exercise involving India, Brazil and South Africa.
The exercise was conducted off Cape Town from October 12 to October 20, 2026.
According to India’s Ministry of Defence, the exercise included professional interactions and maritime activities designed to improve interoperability and operational cooperation among the three navies. The activities included surface warfare, air defence, maritime interdiction, helicopter operations and live firing.
The exercise strengthened military coordination and provided an opportunity for the participating navies to exchange operational experience.
