India Is Testing A New Precision Bomb—Here’s What The PGB-500 Can Do

DRDO and the Indian Air Force are preparing to conduct flight trials of the indigenous PGB-500 precision-guided bomb from the Su-30MKI fighter jet. The September-October 2026 trials could significantly strengthen India's indigenous precision-strike capability.

New Delhi: The PGB-500 guided bomb trials are set to become a major milestone for India’s defence sector. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) are preparing to conduct carriage and release trials of the indigenous 500-kg Precision-Guided Bomb (PGB-500) from the Su-30MKI fighter aircraft during September and October 2026. The trials are part of India’s ongoing effort to strengthen self-reliance in advanced air-to-ground weapons.

The upcoming tests will evaluate the bomb’s integration with the Su-30MKI and move the weapon closer to operational deployment with the Indian Air Force.

Details of DRDO PGB-500 Guided Bomb Trial

According to reports, DRDO and the IAF will jointly carry out carriage and release trials of the PGB-500 bomb during September and October 2026. The trials are expected to take place at Air Force Station Jodhpur and the Chandan firing range near Jaisalmer in Rajasthan.

These tests are essential before any new weapon can be inducted into service. Engineers will verify whether the bomb can be safely carried, released, and guided under different flight conditions.

What Is The PGB-500 Guided Bomb

The PGB-500 is an indigenous 500-kg precision-guided bomb designed for air-to-ground strike missions. It is being developed to provide the Indian Air Force with a powerful and locally produced weapon capable of attacking high-value targets with precision.

The bomb is expected to use advanced guidance technologies such as GPS and inertial navigation systems, allowing it to strike targets accurately even in challenging battlefield conditions.

DRDO PGB-500 Guided Bomb Trial: Why The Su-30MKI Was Chosen

The Su-30MKI remains the backbone of the Indian Air Force fighter fleet. The aircraft is capable of carrying heavy payloads over long distances and has already been integrated with several indigenous weapons.

Its large payload capacity makes it an ideal platform for testing and operating heavy air-to-ground weapons such as the PGB-500.

What Will Be Tested During The DRDO PGB-500 Guided Bomb Trial

The first phase will focus on carriage trials. During these tests, the Su-30MKI will fly with the bomb attached to evaluate aerodynamic performance, structural loads, vibration, and aircraft handling.

The second phase will involve release trials. Engineers will monitor how the bomb separates from the aircraft and whether it follows the intended flight path safely and accurately.

Major Step For India’s Indigenous Weapons Program

The PGB-500 program is part of India’s broader effort to develop indigenous precision-strike weapons. Over the past few years, DRDO has successfully developed and tested several advanced systems for the Indian Air Force.

India has already demonstrated capabilities with weapons such as the RudraM missile, Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon (SAAW), Astra missile, and the Gaurav long-range glide bomb.

What is the Difference Between PGB-500 And TARA

Earlier in May 2026, DRDO and the IAF successfully tested the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) system. TARA is a modular kit that converts conventional bombs into guided weapons.

The PGB-500 is different because it is a purpose-built precision-guided bomb developed from the ground up rather than a conversion kit. This makes it a dedicated strike weapon designed specifically for precision attacks.

What Happens Next

The September-October 2026 trials will determine whether the PGB-500 can safely operate from the Su-30MKI.

If the tests are successful, the weapon will move closer to operational clearance and eventual induction into the Indian Air Force, giving India another powerful indigenous precision-strike capability.
