New Delhi: India plans to buy the Javelin anti-tank system from the United States, according to US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor. The announcement highlights the growing defence partnership between New Delhi and Washington and could open new opportunities for defence co-production between the two countries.

The development comes as India continues to modernize its armed forces and expand procurement of advanced military equipment from the US.

India US Javelin Missile Deal: What Did US Ambassador Sergio Gor Say

US Ambassador Sergio Gor described the move as a major step forward in India-US defence relations. In a public statement, he said India plans to acquire the battle-tested Javelin anti-tank missile system. He also noted that the development could strengthen military cooperation and create opportunities for future co-production initiatives.

The announcement follows discussions on expanding defence cooperation between the two strategic partners.

What Is The Javelin Anti-Tank System

The FGM-148 Javelin is a portable anti-tank missile system developed jointly by Lockheed Martin and RTX (formerly Raytheon). It has been widely used by the US military and allied forces in different combat environments.

Fire-And-Forget Technology

One of the biggest advantages of the Javelin system is its “fire-and-forget” capability. After launch, the missile automatically tracks and engages its target. This allows soldiers to move to safety instead of maintaining guidance throughout the missile’s flight.

Top-Attack Capability

The missile follows a high-arching flight path and strikes armored vehicles from above. Since the top of a tank is generally less protected than its front or sides, this attack profile increases the weapon’s effectiveness against heavily armored targets.

Safe Launch From Enclosed Spaces

The system uses a soft-launch design, enabling soldiers to fire from buildings, bunkers, and other enclosed positions while reducing risk to the operator.

Why Is India US Javelin Missile Deal Important For India

The Javelin system would provide the Indian Army with an advanced anti-armor weapon capable of engaging tanks and armored vehicles with high precision. Its combat-proven performance makes it one of the world’s most respected anti-tank missile systems.

Boost To India-US Defence Cooperation

The proposed procurement reflects the expanding defence partnership between India and the United States. Both countries have increased cooperation across land, sea, air, space, and cyber domains in recent years.

Possibility Of Co-Production

Officials have indicated that the engagement could create opportunities for joint production and industrial collaboration. Such cooperation would support India’s broader goal of increasing domestic defence manufacturing capabilities.

India’s Growing Purchase Of US Defence Equipment

India has steadily expanded its defence acquisitions from the United States over the last decade. The country already operates several US-made platforms, including Apache and Chinook helicopters, C-17 and C-130J transport aircraft, P-8I maritime patrol aircraft, and M777 howitzers.

In November 2025, the US State Department approved a potential $93 million package that included up to 100 Javelin systems and 216 Excalibur guided artillery projectiles for India.
