New Delhi: The Great Nicobar Project is emerging as a key pillar of India’s future strategy, with defence experts saying it will significantly boost the country’s maritime security and economic growth.

Located in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the mega project is designed to transform the region into a global trade and defence hub. Experts believe the initiative will reduce India’s dependence on foreign ports and strengthen its presence in the Indo-Pacific region, making it a major geopolitical move.

What is the Great Nicobar Project?

The Great Nicobar Project is a large-scale infrastructure plan by the Government of India. It includes:

  • An international container transshipment terminal
  • A dual-use (civil and military) airport
  • Power plants and township development

The project aims to create a global maritime hub near major international shipping routes like the Malacca Strait.

Strategic Importance of Great Nicobar Project

Control Over Key Sea Routes

Great Nicobar lies close to the Malacca Strait, one of the busiest maritime trade routes in the world. Around 30% of global trade passes through this region.

This gives India a strong advantage in monitoring and securing vital sea lanes.

Boost to Defence Capabilities

Experts highlight that the project can act like an “unsinkable aircraft carrier,” helping India project power in the Indian Ocean.

  • Strengthens naval and air force presence
  • Improves surveillance of regional waters
  • Counters rising influence of other powers in the Indo-Pacific

Tri-Service Military Advantage

The island is expected to support integrated military operations across the Army, Navy, and Air Force, improving India’s rapid response capability.

Economic Benefits and Trade Growth

Global Shipping Hub

The transshipment port will allow India to handle more international cargo directly, reducing reliance on ports in countries like Singapore and Sri Lanka.

Job Creation and Revenue

  • Expected to generate thousands of jobs
  • Potential to create major revenue streams through trade and logistics
  • Boosts tourism and regional development

Estimates suggest the project could generate significant economic output by 2040.

Great Nicobar Project: Alignment with India’s Vision

The project aligns with major national initiatives such as:

  • Maritime India Vision 2030
  • Act East Policy
  • Indo-Pacific strategy

It aims to position India as a leading maritime power in the region.

Great Nicobar Project: Environmental and Social Concerns

Despite strong strategic support, the project has raised concerns:

  • Impact on forests and biodiversity
  • Risks to indigenous tribes like the Shompen and Nicobarese
  • Large-scale ecological changes

However, authorities say environmental safeguards and conditions have been included in approvals.
