New Delhi: HAL HTFE-25 engine has achieved a major milestone after its core engine successfully reached 99.5% of its maximum design speed during testing. The achievement marks significant progress in India’s indigenous turbofan engine programme led by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). While the latest performance details have emerged through HAL’s disclosures, the company’s official documents confirm that the HTFE-25 remains under development as a strategic 25 kN turbofan engine for trainers, UAVs and other aircraft.

What Is the HAL HTFE-25 Engine

The Hindustan Turbo Fan Engine-25 (HTFE-25) is an indigenous 25-kilonewton thrust turbofan engine being developed by HAL’s Aero Engine Research and Development Centre (AERDC) in Bengaluru.

According to HAL, the engine is designed for basic and advanced military trainer aircraft, large unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), small business jets, and aircraft weighing up to five tonnes in a single-engine configuration or nine tonnes in a twin-engine setup.

HTFE-25 Core Engine Reaches 99.5% Speed

HAL’s latest testing indicates that the HTFE-25 core engine has successfully demonstrated reliable ignition, smooth acceleration and operation up to 99.5% of its maximum design speed.

The milestone suggests that the engine’s core—including the compressor, combustor and turbine—is performing close to its intended operating limits before full-engine qualification and certification. However, HAL has not yet announced that the engine has entered production or completed certification.

Why the 99.5% Speed Milestone Is Important

The engine core is the most technically demanding part of any turbofan engine. Reaching 99.5% design speed shows that the core can operate under extremely high temperatures, pressure and rotational stress. This is considered an important step before endurance testing, full-engine validation and certification.

Experts consider such testing essential because aero engines require years of reliability trials before they can be approved for operational aircraft.

HTFE-25 Engine: Developed With HAL’s Internal Funding

One of the unique aspects of the HTFE-25 programme is that HAL has largely funded the project internally. This has allowed the company to continue development without depending entirely on dedicated government programme funding, although it has also contributed to a longer development timeline. HAL continues to invest in infrastructure and testing facilities to accelerate engine development.

New Test Facility Boosts Engine Development

In December 2023, the Ministry of Defence inaugurated HAL’s new 10,000-square-metre aero-engine design and test facility in Bengaluru. The facility includes advanced manufacturing systems and dedicated test beds for both the HTFE-25 and HTSE-1200 engine programmes, strengthening India’s indigenous aero-engine capabilities.

HTFE-25 Engine: A Long Journey Since 2013

HAL began developing the HTFE-25 around 2013 to reduce India’s dependence on imported aircraft engines. Over the years, the programme has gone through multiple design improvements, testing phases and infrastructure upgrades. HAL’s annual reports continue to list the HTFE-25 among its key indigenous strategic engine programmes currently under development.
