New Delhi: The IAF Hawk trainer replacement programme has officially moved forward as the Indian Air Force (IAF) begins the search for a new advanced jet trainer to replace its ageing Hawk Mk-132 fleet. The Air Force has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to Indian and global aerospace companies for around 150 aircraft. The new trainer will prepare future fighter pilots for advanced combat aircraft such as the Rafale, Tejas, and the upcoming Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).

The Hawk Mk-132 has served as India’s advanced jet trainer for nearly two decades. However, the aircraft is aging and no longer fully meets the training needs of modern fighter aviation.

Today’s fighter pilots must learn to operate advanced radar systems, electronic warfare equipment, networked sensors, data links, and beyond-visual-range (BVR) missiles before joining frontline squadrons. The IAF believes a next-generation trainer is needed to prepare pilots for these increasingly complex combat environments.
What Is the IAF Hawk Trainer Replacement Project
The Indian Air Force has issued an RFI seeking information from aircraft manufacturers in India and abroad. The requirement is for approximately 150 advanced jet trainer aircraft. These aircraft will be used during the final phase of pilot training before pilots transition to operational fighter aircraft. The procurement process is currently in the market-survey stage, with formal tendering expected in the coming years.
Which Aircraft Are Likely Contenders
Several international and Indian aircraft are expected to compete for the programme. Potential contenders include:
- Leonardo M-346 Master (Italy)
- KAI T-50 Golden Eagle family (South Korea)
- Boeing-Saab T-7A Red Hawk (United States)
- HAL LIFT-42 concept (India)
The IAF has indicated a preference for the “Buy Indian” or higher indigenous-content category, while also considering technology transfer and local manufacturing opportunities.
What Features Does the IAF Want
The Air Force is looking for a trainer aircraft that closely replicates the experience of flying modern combat jets. Key requirements include:
- Fly-by-wire flight control system
- Glass cockpit with advanced displays
- Hands-on Throttle and Stick (HOTAS) controls
- Embedded simulation systems
- Electronic warfare training capability
- Missile engagement simulation
- Secure data links
- GPS and navigation integration
- Zero-zero ejection seats
The aircraft should also support virtual and live training environments.
IAF Hawk Trainer Replacement: How Will It Help Future Fighter Pilots
The new trainer will bridge the gap between basic training aircraft and frontline fighters. Pilots will be able to train on advanced combat scenarios before moving to aircraft such as:
- Rafale
- Tejas Mk1A
- Tejas Mk2
- Su-30MKI
- AMCA (future)
This will reduce pressure on operational fighter squadrons and improve overall pilot readiness.
Current Status of the Hawk Fleet
The IAF has operated more than 100 Hawk Mk-132 trainer aircraft. The first Hawk contract was signed in 2004. Additional aircraft were later produced in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) under licence.
The Hawk entered service in 2008 and became the primary advanced jet trainer for Indian fighter pilots. However, changing battlefield requirements and rapid technological advances have created the need for a more capable training platform.
Challenges Facing India’s Trainer Aircraft Programmes
India has worked on several indigenous trainer aircraft projects over the years. The HTT-40 basic trainer programme experienced delays before entering production.
Similarly, the HJT-36 “Yashas” intermediate trainer took many years to reach advanced testing stages. The proposed HAL LIFT-42 remains under development and has not yet entered production. These experiences highlight the importance of timely execution for the new trainer programme.
