India’s Indigenous Aircraft Engine Project Explained: Everything You Need To Know

CSIR and DRDO are planning an indigenous turboprop engine for the Saras Mk2 transport aircraft and future HALE UCAVs.

New Delhi: Indigenous turboprop engine For Saras Mk2 is emerging as a major step in India’s journey towards aerospace self-reliance. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) are reportedly preparing a proposal to jointly develop a homegrown turboprop engine for the Saras Mk2 light transport aircraft. If approved by the Ministry of Defence (MoD), the engine could also power future High-Altitude Long-Endurance (HALE) Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs), reducing India’s dependence on imported aircraft engines.

What Is The CSIR-DRDO Indigenous Turboprop Engine Project

The proposed programme aims to design, develop and manufacture an indigenous medium-power turboprop engine in India. At present, the project is understood to be in the proposal stage. The Ministry of Defence will decide whether to provide funding after reviewing the technical feasibility, long-term demand and economic viability of the programme. If approved, it would become one of India’s most important indigenous aero-engine development projects for transport aircraft and unmanned aerial systems.

Why Does India Need An Indigenous Turboprop Engine

India has made significant progress in designing aircraft, but aircraft engines remain one of the country’s biggest technology gaps. The Saras Mk2 currently uses imported Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-67A turboprop engines, which are globally proven but sourced from abroad. Developing an Indian alternative would reduce import dependence and strengthen supply chain security.

An indigenous engine would also provide greater operational freedom by reducing dependence on foreign suppliers for upgrades, spare parts and future modifications.

What Is Saras Mk2

The Saras Mk2 is a 19-seat twin-engine turboprop light transport aircraft being developed by CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories (CSIR-NAL).

The aircraft is designed for both civil and military missions, including regional connectivity, troop transport, surveillance and logistics operations. The Indian Air Force has issued a Letter of Intent to acquire 15 Saras Mk2 aircraft initially. The aircraft features:

  • Digital avionics
  • Glass cockpit
  • Pressurised cabin
  • Automatic flight control system
  • Improved aerodynamics
  • Lower operating costs

These features make it suitable for operations from smaller airports under India’s regional connectivity plans.

How Will The Indigenous Turboprop Engine Benefit Saras Mk2

Replacing imported engines with an Indian-made turboprop engine could offer several long-term advantages.

Lower Import Dependence

India would reduce reliance on foreign engine manufacturers for maintenance, upgrades and spare parts.

Better Supply Chain Security

Domestic production would reduce risks caused by geopolitical tensions, export restrictions or global supply disruptions.

Lower Lifetime Costs

Although development costs will be high, local manufacturing could reduce maintenance and lifecycle expenses over the aircraft’s service life.

Future Upgrades Become Easier

Indian engineers would have complete control over software, hardware and future performance improvements without requiring overseas approvals.

The Engine Could Also Power Future HALE UCAVs

One of the biggest strategic advantages of the project is its possible use beyond the Saras Mk2. According to the proposal, the engine may also power future High-Altitude Long-Endurance (HALE) Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs).

These large drones require reliable, fuel-efficient engines capable of flying long missions for surveillance, intelligence gathering and precision strike operations. A common indigenous engine platform could reduce development costs across multiple defence programmes.

Why Is Developing Aero Engines So Difficult

Aircraft engines are among the most complex engineering systems ever built. They must operate safely under extremely high temperatures, pressures and rotational speeds while maintaining excellent fuel efficiency and reliability. Developing a completely indigenous aero engine requires advanced expertise in:

High-Temperature Materials

Special alloys are needed to survive extreme operating conditions.

Precision Manufacturing

Engine parts must be manufactured with microscopic accuracy.

Testing And Certification

Every new engine undergoes thousands of hours of ground and flight testing before entering service. Because of these challenges, only a handful of countries have successfully developed advanced aircraft engines.

How Does This Project Fit Into Atmanirbhar Bharat

The proposal strongly supports the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. India already designs aircraft such as:

  • Saras Mk2
  • HANSA-NG
  • Tejas
  • Various UAV platforms

However, many of these aircraft still rely on imported propulsion systems. Developing a domestic turboprop engine would close one of the most critical technology gaps in India’s aerospace ecosystem.
