New Delhi: Akash missile export has become a major milestone for India’s defence industry after former DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat said that India has exported the indigenous Akash surface-to-air missile system to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. The development highlights India’s growing role as a trusted defence exporter and supports the government’s vision of making India a global defence manufacturing hub. The Akash missile system was approved for export by the Government of India in 2020.

What Is the Akash Missile System

The Akash missile system is manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) with major contributions from Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and DRDO.

The weapon system combines advanced radar, command-and-control systems and mobile launchers, making it suitable for protecting military bases and critical infrastructure.

It is designed to destroy fighter aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and drones. The system can engage multiple aerial targets at the same time and is known for its mobility and quick deployment. The missile has an operational range of about 25 km in its standard version.

What is the Importance of Tajikistan and Turkmenistan for India

Both Tajikistan and Turkmenistan are strategically located in Central Asia. These countries have traditionally depended on Russian military equipment. By choosing Indian-made defence systems, they can diversify their defence supplies while strengthening cooperation with India.

The reported exports also expand India’s defence presence in a region that has growing geopolitical importance.

Akash Missile Export: India’s Defence Exports Continue to Grow

India’s defence exports have increased significantly in recent years due to the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The country now exports a wide range of military equipment, including radar systems, artillery, patrol vessels, protective equipment and missile systems. Akash is expected to become one of India’s flagship defence export products alongside other indigenous platforms.

Official Position

The Government of India approved the export of the Akash missile system in 2020 to encourage defence exports. However, detailed official information regarding deliveries to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan has not yet been publicly released by the Ministry of Defence. The latest reports are based on remarks made by former DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat.
