New Delhi: The Indian Coast Guard fleet expansion is a major step to make India’s seas safer. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) plans to increase its strength to 200 ships and 100 aircraft in the coming years. This will improve coastal surveillance, maritime security, search and rescue operations, anti-smuggling missions, and disaster response. The expansion also supports India’s goal of building a stronger and more modern maritime force.

Details of Indian Coast Guard Fleet Expansion

The Indian Coast Guard has announced plans to expand its operational strength to 200 ships and 100 aircraft. The force said the expansion will improve round-the-clock monitoring of India’s maritime borders. It will also help the Coast Guard respond faster to emergencies and security threats across the country’s vast coastline.

According to the ICG, its ships and aircraft together create a strong security shield that protects India’s maritime interests.

What are the Reasons of Indian Coast Guard Fleet Expansion

India has a coastline of over 7,500 kilometres and a large Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Thousands of commercial ships, fishing boats and naval vessels travel through Indian waters every year. A larger Coast Guard fleet is needed to monitor these waters and protect national interests.

The expansion will help the Coast Guard:

  • Improve coastal surveillance
  • Stop illegal fishing
  • Prevent smuggling and piracy
  • Conduct faster search and rescue operations
  • Respond quickly to natural disasters
  • Protect marine resources

Current Strength of the Indian Coast Guard

At present, the Indian Coast Guard operates around:

  • 155 advanced ships
  • 82 aircraft

These include offshore patrol vessels, interceptor boats, fast patrol vessels, hovercraft and maritime surveillance aircraft. The force continues to add modern platforms every year to strengthen India’s maritime security.

New Ships Under Construction

The Indian government is building several new ships to achieve its future fleet target. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) is constructing six Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) for the Indian Coast Guard.

These advanced ships will feature:

  • Range of about 5,000 nautical miles
  • Maximum speed of 23 knots
  • Modern navigation systems
  • AI-based predictive maintenance
  • Integrated Bridge System
  • Integrated Platform Management System
  • Ability to stay at sea for longer missions

These features will help the Coast Guard patrol larger areas without frequent refuelling.

Indian Coast Guard Is Also Expanding Its Air Wing

The Coast Guard is not only adding ships but also strengthening its aviation fleet. The future force will include 100 aircraft, which will improve:

  • Maritime surveillance
  • Coastal monitoring
  • Search and rescue missions
  • Pollution response
  • Emergency medical support
  • Disaster relief operations

Aircraft help the Coast Guard quickly reach areas where ships may take several hours.

Indian Coast Guard Fleet Expansion: Focus on Indigenous Defence Manufacturing

Most of the new platforms are being built in India. This supports the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative by promoting indigenous defence manufacturing and reducing dependence on imported equipment.

Indian shipyards and defence companies are playing an important role in this modernization programme.

How Will This Expansion Benefit India

The larger fleet will make India’s maritime security stronger. It will help the Coast Guard monitor sea routes more effectively and respond faster to any security challenge. The expansion will also improve coordination with the Indian Navy and other maritime agencies.
