New Delhi: Indian navy layered naval firepower is becoming one of India’s biggest defence upgrades. Instead of relying on a single missile, the Indian Navy is building a multi-layered strike capability using NASM-MR, BrahMos-NG, BrahMos, and the proposed Glidefire missile. This strategy will allow the Navy to choose the most suitable missile for every mission while improving operational efficiency, reducing costs, and strengthening maritime security across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). According to DRDO, indigenous missile development remains a key part of India’s defence modernization.

What Is Indian Navy Layered Naval Firepower Strategy

India is developing a layered missile architecture where every missile has a different purpose. Instead of using one expensive missile against every target, commanders can select the most suitable weapon based on range, speed, target type, and mission requirements. This improves operational flexibility while reducing unnecessary costs during combat.

Indian Navy Layered Naval Firepower: Why Is The Indian Navy Expanding Beyond BrahMos

For over 20 years, BrahMos has been India’s primary anti-ship cruise missile. It is designed for destroying heavily defended warships and strategic targets at supersonic speed. However, not every mission requires such a powerful and expensive missile.

Smaller enemy vessels, patrol ships, and medium-value targets can be engaged more efficiently using lighter weapons. That is why India is developing new indigenous missile systems alongside BrahMos.

What Is NASM-MR

The Naval Anti-Ship Missile–Medium Range (NASM-MR) is DRDO’s next-generation indigenous anti-ship missile. Expected features include:

  • Range: Around 350 km
  • Speed: Around Mach 0.9
  • Warhead: 150 kg

Launch Platforms:

  • MiG-29K fighter aircraft
  • Surface warships
  • Submarines

NASM-MR is designed to bridge the capability gap between short-range anti-ship missiles and long-range cruise missiles.

Indian Navy Layered Naval Firepower: What Is BrahMos-NG

BrahMos-NG is the lighter and more compact version of the existing BrahMos missile. Its smaller size allows fighter aircraft like Tejas and MiG-29K to carry more missiles during a mission. Despite its reduced size, BrahMos-NG will retain the high-speed strike capability that has made BrahMos one of the world’s fastest operational cruise missiles.

What Is a Glidefire Missile

The proposed Glidefire missile is expected to become an affordable medium-range precision weapon. Unlike BrahMos, Glidefire is not intended to replace India’s flagship cruise missile. Instead, it could provide commanders with a lower-cost option for engaging medium-value naval and land targets. As of now, DRDO has not officially released detailed specifications of the Glidefire programme.

Indian Navy Layered Naval Firepower: How Will Each Missile Be Used

MissilePrimary Role
BrahMosLong-range strikes against high-value warships
BrahMos-NGCompact supersonic missile for fighter aircraft
NASM-MRMedium-range anti-ship missile for flexible operations
GlidefireCost-effective strikes against medium-value targets
NASM-SRShort-range helicopter-launched anti-ship missions

Why Is Indian Navy Layered Naval Firepower Strategy For India’s Defence

A diversified missile inventory gives the Indian Navy several advantages.

  • Better mission flexibility
  • Lower operational costs
  • Higher combat effectiveness
  • Stronger indigenous defence manufacturing
  • Improved maritime deterrence in the Indian Ocean Region

This strategy also supports the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative by encouraging indigenous missile development.

Will Glidefire Replace BrahMos

No. Available information indicates that Glidefire is not being developed as a replacement for BrahMos. Instead, it will complement BrahMos by handling missions that do not require a heavy supersonic cruise missile. BrahMos will continue to remain India’s primary long-range heavy strike weapon.
