New Delhi: The Indian Navy has deployed its advanced P-8I maritime patrol aircraft to Hawaii to take part in the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2026 exercise. Hosted by the US Pacific Fleet, RIMPAC is the world’s largest multinational naval exercise and brings together partner nations to improve cooperation, maritime security and operational readiness.

The Indian Navy has sent its P-8I Long-Range Maritime Reconnaissance and Anti-Submarine Warfare (LRMR-ASW) aircraft to Hawaii for RIMPAC 2026.

The deployment reflects India’s growing role in international maritime security and its strong defence partnership with the United States and other Indo-Pacific nations.
What is RIMPAC 2026
Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) is the world’s largest international naval exercise. It is conducted every two years by the US Pacific Fleet around the Hawaiian Islands.
The 2026 edition is the 30th RIMPAC exercise and features the theme: “Partners: Integrated and Prepared.”

According to official information released by the US Navy:
- Around 30 countries are participating.
- More than 30 surface warships are involved.
- Five submarines are taking part.
- More than 200 aircraft are participating.
- Thousands of military personnel are training together around Hawaii.
What are the Objectives of the RIMPAC 2026
RIMPAC aims to improve cooperation between friendly navies through realistic military training. The exercise includes:
- Maritime surveillance
- Gunnery and missile firing
- Anti-submarine warfare
- Counter-piracy operations
- Mine countermeasure exercises
- Amphibious warfare
- Air defence operations
- Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR)
- Search and rescue missions
What is the Importance of India’s Participation
India regularly conducts naval exercises with partner countries to strengthen maritime security. The Indian Navy and US Navy also cooperate through exercises such as:
- Malabar
- Milan
- La Pérouse
Both navies also work together in the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) and coordinate during humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations. Existing defence agreements between India and the US, including BECA and COMCASA, further improve communication, information sharing and operational coordination.
What is P-8I Aircraft
The P-8I is a long-range maritime patrol aircraft based on the Boeing 737-800 platform and specially designed for the Indian Navy. Its major capabilities include:
