New Delhi: India’s defence technology sector has taken a major step forward with the announcement that Kaal Bhairava, India’s first AI combat aircraft, will now be manufactured in Europe.
The autonomous combat aircraft is being developed by an Indian AI warfare company in partnership with European technology company SKETCHPIXEL LDA. The first overseas manufacturing unit will be set up in Portugal, marking a historic moment for India’s indigenous defence ecosystem.
What Is Kaal Bhairava?
Kaal Bhairava is a next-generation autonomous combat aircraft designed for modern AI-driven warfare.
Key features include:
- Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance (MALE) autonomous combat platform
- Range of around 3,000 km
- Operational endurance of more than 30 hours
- AI-powered target recognition
- Swarm coordination capability
- Encrypted communication systems
- Autonomous mission planning and combat decision-making
The aircraft has been developed to support future warfare requirements where artificial intelligence, automation, and network-centric operations play a critical role.
Kaal Bhairava: Portugal Chosen as First Overseas Manufacturing Hub
FWDA confirmed that Portugal will become the first international manufacturing node for the Kaal Bhairava platform.
The company signed a partnership with SKETCHPIXEL LDA, a European aerospace and simulation technology firm known for advanced fighter jet simulation systems used for aircraft like the F-16.
Under the agreement:
- SKETCHPIXEL will provide:
- AI integration
- Simulation technologies
- Communication systems
- NATO interoperability capabilities
- FWDA will retain:
- Intellectual property rights
- Core autonomous systems
- Airframe design ownership
Why This Development Is Important
This move is important for several reasons:
1. Indian Defence Technology Going Global
For decades, India depended heavily on imported combat aircraft from countries such as Russia, France, and the United States.
Now, an Indian-designed autonomous combat aircraft will be manufactured inside a NATO member state for the first time.
2. Boost to Make-in-India Defence Vision
The development supports India’s broader “Make in India” defence manufacturing strategy by showing that Indian private defence firms can compete globally.
3. Growing Role of AI in Warfare
Modern militaries are increasingly investing in:
- AI-based combat systems
- Autonomous drones
- Swarm warfare
- Real-time battlefield analytics
Kaal Bhairava fits directly into this global defence trend.
What Is Operation 777?
The Portugal facility is part of FWDA’s long-term expansion strategy called Operation 777.
The initiative aims to:
- Build manufacturing partnerships across seven continents
- Expand Indian autonomous warfare systems globally
- Create deployment and integration hubs in 77 countries
According to company statements, the Portugal hub will act as the first international node under this global strategy.
Strategic Importance of Kaal Bhairava for Europe and NATO
Portugal’s NATO access and strategic location could help:
- Improve European defence cooperation
- Expand export opportunities
- Enable interoperability with allied systems
- Support future deployment partnerships
This partnership also signals increasing international confidence in Indian defence technology startups.
