New Delhi: Russia’s Su-75 Checkmate development program has entered a new stage after the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) confirmed that construction of the first flight prototype is now underway.

The announcement marks one of the most significant updates for Russia’s light fifth-generation fighter project since its public unveiling in 2021.

According to UAC CEO Vadim Badekha, the aircraft is being developed for both the Russian military and export customers, with a strong focus on reducing acquisition and operating costs.

Key Highlights of the Su-75 Checkmate Development

  • UAC has officially started building the first Su-75 Checkmate prototype.
  • The fighter is designed as a single-engine fifth-generation stealth aircraft.
  • Russia aims to offer a lower-cost alternative to heavier stealth fighters.
  • The aircraft is intended for both domestic and international customers.
  • Industry estimates suggest the maiden flight could occur between late 2026 and 2027.
  • The project heavily leverages technologies developed for the Su-57 fighter program.

Official Confirmation

Vadim Badekha, CEO of UAC, confirmed that production of the first prototype has begun.

He emphasized that the project represents Russia’s return to the single-engine fighter segment, an area where Soviet aviation once had a strong presence before shifting toward twin-engine combat aircraft.

According to Badekha, the aircraft is being designed to meet the needs of both the Russian Ministry of Defence and foreign buyers.

He also noted that affordability remains one of the key goals of the program.

Why the Su-75 Checkmate Development Matters

The Su-75 Checkmate is Russia’s attempt to enter the global market for affordable stealth fighters.

Many countries operate aging fourth-generation aircraft and may not have the budget for expensive fifth-generation platforms. Russia believes the Checkmate can fill that gap by offering:

  • Stealth characteristics
  • Lower operating costs
  • Reduced procurement costs
  • Modern avionics and sensors
  • Multirole combat capabilities

The aircraft was originally presented as a direct competitor in the medium-weight stealth fighter category.

Expected Specifications

While the aircraft remains under development, previously released information indicates the following targets:

SpecificationExpected Capability
GenerationFifth-generation
EngineSingle-engine
Maximum SpeedAround Mach 1.8
RangeUp to 3,000 km
PayloadMore than 7,000 kg
ConfigurationStealth multirole fighter

These figures are based on official program disclosures and industry tracking.

Link with the Su-57 Program

One of the biggest advantages of the Checkmate program is its expected use of technologies already developed for the Su-57 stealth fighter.

Analysts believe this approach could:

  • Reduce development costs
  • Shorten testing timelines
  • Improve production efficiency
  • Increase reliability through common systems

Russia has repeatedly stated that the Checkmate will benefit from existing stealth, propulsion and avionics technologies created for the Su-57 program.
