Lucknow: India’s indigenous defence manufacturing sector received another major boost after SSS Defence successfully delivered 2,000 indigenous M72 carbines to Uttar Pradesh Police.
The M72 carbine delivery highlights the growing trust in homegrown weapons systems and supports the government’s “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives. The latest induction is expected to strengthen modern law enforcement operations, especially urban combat, anti-terror missions, and rapid response policing.
Details of UP Police SSS Defence M72 carbines Induction
Bengaluru-based SSS Defence completed the handover of 2,000 M72 5.56×45 mm carbines to the UP Police this week. The contract was originally awarded in March 2025 as part of the police modernization program aimed at replacing outdated firearms with advanced tactical weapons.
According to reports, the delivery marks one of the largest state police procurements from a private Indian small-arms manufacturer in recent years. The move also reflects increasing confidence among Indian police forces in domestically designed and manufactured weapons systems.

The weapon is designed for police and paramilitary personnel operating in crowded urban environments where mobility and fast reaction time are critical.
Fully Indigenous Weapon System
Company officials stated that the M72 is a “100% indigenous” weapon platform developed without foreign technology transfer. The firearm has reportedly been fully designed, manufactured, tested, and certified in India.
The M72 is part of the company’s broader family of indigenous weapons, including:
- G72 submachine gun
- P72 assault rifle
- Viper sniper rifle
- Saber sniper rifle
The company says these platforms were developed specifically for Indian operational conditions and user requirements.
Tribute to Former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar
Interestingly, the “M” in M72 is reportedly named in tribute to former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, who played a key role in opening India’s defence sector to private manufacturers.
SSS Defence CEO Vivek Krishnan reportedly said that reforms introduced during Parrikar’s tenure helped private companies enter India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem. These reforms encouraged indigenous innovation and reduced dependency on imports.
Growing Adoption by Indian Security Forces
The M72 and other SSS Defence weapons are already being used by several Indian security agencies and police departments, including:
- Punjab Police
- Meghalaya Police
- National Security Guard
- Uttar Pradesh Police
Reports suggest the company is also exploring export opportunities and participation in international military modernization programs, including discussions related to the UK’s future infantry weapon systems.
